Tips for Public Speaking |
Overview:
The
Oral
Presentation is an opportunity for you to share your findings with your
classmates and to learn from them what they discovered in the course of
their research. This is an extemporaneous speaking
presentation.
You should not read from your paper, from your PowerPoint presentation,
or from your notes. You may use notes to keep yourself organized,
but you should speak in a natural way. Please practice the
presentation,
dress appropriately, and plan to keep to your time limit. A
rubric specifically designed to grade this presentation will be
distributed to you in class and can be found at the link below: |
Choice
#1:
Traditional
Research Paper
Length of Oral Presentation: 5-10 minutes (including questions from the audience) Present
your
major points
and support in a 5-10 minute extemporaneous presentation to your
classmates.
Prepare and practice this presentation, but do not memorize or read
it.
You may work from notes, but keep the presentation short and
well-structured.
You may want to focus on a particular aspect of your paper that you
think
the class might find interesting, or you can give a general overview of
your thesis and findings. |
Choice #2:
Group PowerPoint
Presentation
Length of Oral Presentation: 5 minutes per student (with an additional 5 minutes for questions) Present your completed PowerPoint to the class in a presentation which runs about five minutes per person. Each member of the group must speak for at least five minutes, and the presentation should run no more than 25 minutes, total. Prepare and practice this presentation, but do not memorize or read it. You may work from notes, but keep the presentation short and well-structured. |
