Tips for Public Speaking

Overview: The Oral Presentation is an opportunity for you to share your findings with your classmates and to learn from them what they discovered in the course of their research.  This is an extemporaneous speaking presentation.  You should not read from your paper, from your PowerPoint presentation, or from your notes.  You may use notes to keep yourself organized, but you should speak in a natural way.  Please practice the presentation, dress appropriately, and plan to keep to your time limit.

Choice #1: Traditional Research Paper

Length of Oral Presentation: 5-10 minutes (including questions from the audience)

Present your major points and support in a 5-10 minute extemporaneous presentation to your classmates.  Prepare and practice this presentation, but do not memorize or read it.  You may work from notes, but keep the presentation short and well-structured.  You may want to focus on a particular aspect of your paper that you think the class might find interesting, or you can give a general overview of your thesis and findings.
