FIRST SOUTHERN AFRICAN SUMMER SCHOOL AND WORKSHOP ON LOGIC, UNIVERSAL ALGEBRA, AND THEORETICAL COMPUTER SCIENCE (LUATCS'99) TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION INFO DEAR LECTURERS AND PARTICIPANTS, Please read the information relevant to you, and if you have any questions, respond as soon as possible. An updated programme will be sent to you in a few days. I. TRAVEL: Please note that the public transport in Johannesburg is rather rudimentary. It mainly consists of municipal busses (running during office hours, not very often and along very limited routes) and various minibus-taxis (which are often crowded and not very safe and reliable). II. For your transportation from the airport to RAU or to your place of accommodation we suggest the following ways: i) You can hire a taxi from the International arrivals hall at the airport. We know of two reliable companies (but probably there are more) which have offices there: "Impala Tours" and "Info Africa". A trip to RAU or the Wits hostels costs approx. R150-160; a trip to Randburg - approx R180, for up to 3 passengers. ii) "Impala Tours" also runs a bus between the airport and Rotunda bus station in downtown Johannesburg, every 45 min, starting from 6.30 in the morning and the ticket costs R50; a taxi can be hired from there to RAU for approx R30. iii) Also there are other taxis operating outside the airport. If you use their service, make sure they are from a registered company and negotiate your cost in advance. As mentioned in the 3rd announcement, we intended to hire a shuttle car between RAU and the airport, but it turned out that the cost would be essentially the same as that of a taxi. Some telephones: (All phones below are in Johannesburg, the code of which is 011, but is not to be dialed from within the city.) "Info Africa": 390-9000 "Impala Tours": 975-0510 (airport office) : 974-6561 (head office) Rotunda bus station: 333-3813. NOTE THAT THE BUS FOR THE ISLAND IS LEAVING FROM RAU AT 14.00 ON NOVEMBER 30, AND THERE WILL BE NO OTHER TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED BY US. III. ACCOMMODATION: You must have already received personalized info regarding your accommodation. If you have any queries regarding your accomodation, please contact us NOT LATER THAN NOV 23. Bus transport from (in the mornings) and to (in the evenings) the hotels and the hostels to RAU will be arranged during the 2nd part of the school, 6-11 December. IV. REGISTRATION. 1. GETTING TO RAU CAMPUS: The campus is situated in Auckland park, a relatively quiet suburb off the city center. There are several entrances, of which you are advised to use entrance No 2 at the corner of Ditton Str. and Ripley Str., or the main entrance in Kingsway. Please advise the security guards at the entrance that you are coming for the LUATCS school. If any problem phone the department (ext. 2835) from the entrance. The main building of the university is a huge concrete structure in the shape of a semi-ring, consisting of 4 connected segments (rings) of 7 storeys each: A,B,C,D. The department of mathematics, where the registration will take place, is situated in C Ring, on the 5th floor, which is indicated as "C Ring 5", or just "C5" . The board sign at the entrance to the department says "WISKUNDE". (Note that, because of the slant of the ground, the floor number decreases by one when moving from one building to the next one, e.g. C5 is on the same level as B6 and D4.) 2. REGISTRATION TIMES AND PLACES. The registration will take place as follows: November 30: 10.00-14.00, Department of Mathematics, C Ring 5. December 5: 12.00-16.00, Department of Mathematics, C Ring 5. December 6: 8.00-8.30 and 13.30-14.30, D Les 307. 3. LECTURES. All lectures and other activities will take place in D Ring.
