TEACHING

The principal activity of Full-time faculty, Core Faculty, and Part-time Faculty is teaching.  The prime requisites of an effective teacher are intellectual competence, integrity, independence, and a willingness to consider suggestions and to cooperate in teaching activities.  Faculty will adhere to tenets of the official course syllabus and, as part of the underlying philosophy of Chapman, integrate values inherent in their discipline in each course taught.  Faculty will show evidence of scholarly inquiry, which leads the teacher to develop and strengthen course content including new developments in the field and comprehensive graduate-level knowledge base.  Faculty will show a vital interest in teaching and working with students by demonstrating reasonable accessibility to students, and above all, by stimulating students’ intellectual interest and enthusiasm.  Faculty will apply adult learning theory and collaborative strategies, use resources provided by Thurmond Clark Memorial Library, utilize teaching tools such as internet, power point, black board, and/or e-mail, and outside sources such as guest speakers and field trips to enhance the learning environment.  Faculty are responsible for evaluating individual and group work of students that demonstrate recognition of differences in level of performances.  The quality of teaching is admittedly difficult to evaluate.  This evaluation is so important, however, that recommendations for an individual’s continued employment or promotion should consider, at a minimum evidence drawn from such sources as:  end of course student evaluations, colleagues who have visited the class or who have been closely associated with his or her teaching as a supervisor or in some other capacity, course development and revision, syllabus preparation, tutorial assistance, and administrative evaluation.

FULL-TIME FACULTY

Full-time Faculty are ranked faculty who teach 24-credits (8 blocks) per academic year (Terms IV, V, I, and II) and maintain a presence in the office four days per week, for a total of 16 hours per week, to ensure availability to students and cover administrative responsibilities.  Release blocks (exchange time) for administrative and/or University service will be determined by needs of specific programs by the Associate Deans.

Teaching is the principal activity of faculty and includes appropriate work and involvement with students beyond, as well as within, the classroom.  As advisors and mentors, full-time faculty serve as departmental advisors for students in their major area, and assist students in following University and academic discipline requirements and in setting academic and future educational and career goals.  Duties of the full-time faculty may include but are not limited to: teaching, student advising, mentoring, curriculum design, approvals for courses by reading and conference and independent study courses, part-time faculty approvals, program assessment and management, participation in campus and regional faculty meetings, University service, and community outreach.

The purpose of University College full-time faculty is to show evidence of effectiveness in teaching, to provide advisement and mentoring of students, to ensure a diverse contingent of educational experts to teach, outreach, and participate in service to the University and local communities.  Full-time faculty members build professional relationships with students, administrative staff, the Discipline Chair, the Associate Dean, and Dean of University College.  Full-time faculty are evaluated by their Associate Dean and/or Dean.

CORE FACULTY

Core Faculty are ranked faculty who teach four classes (no additional courses may be taught) annually and maintain eight office hours per week within a region.  Duties of the Core Faculty may include but are not limited to:  teaching, curriculum design, program assessment and management, outreach, mentoring, student advising, and participation in campus and regional faculty meetings.  These duties may require travel.

The purpose of University College Core Faculty is to ensure a diverse contingent of educational experts.  Core faculty are expected to provide effective instruction through the use of a variety of teaching techniques and the incorporation of technology when appropriate.  Additionally, they are required to develop curriculum, evaluate students’ work in a timely manner, and provide students with both advisement and mentoring.  Core Faculty members build internal relationships with students, administrative staff, the Discipline Chair and their Associate Dean.  Core Faculty are evaluated by their Associate Dean and/or Dean.

PART-TIME INSTRUCTORS

Part-time instructors teach five or fewer classes per annum and no more than 30% of the classes offered in any one discipline.  Duties of part-time instructors may include but are not limited to:  teaching, curriculum design, mentoring, ensuring the oral and written competence of students, and participation in campus faculty meetings.

The purpose of University College part-time instructors is to ensure a breadth of capable instructors who remain practitioners in their field of expertise.  These individuals, employed in their area of content instruction, bring the practicalities of the workplace alive in the classroom. Part-time instructors may build internal relationships with students, Full-Time Faculty, and an Associate Dean.  Part-time instructors are evaluated by the Full-Time Faculty, students, peers, and Associate Dean and/or Dean.
