FTTP/PON System Building and Testing

Course Number: CSCU 0090
Contact Hours: 16
Prerequisites: CSCU 0088: FTTP/PON Fundamentals
                            CSCU 0089: FTTP/PON Splicing & Termination

Description

A class that teaches advanced system building, testing and troubleshooting skills for students who need to understand how to implement and restore telecommunications network service connectivity. Students will receive expert lecture and in depth practical hands-on exposure as they construct, test, troubleshoot and repair mock passive optical network channel.

This is an intermediate to advanced level class and attending students must have first completed both the FTTP/PON Fundamentals class and the FTTP/PON Splicing and Termination class or have equivalent experience. We recommend this course for anyone who plans to install, maintain and/or repair PON systems, as this course will put all the acquired skills to use building, testing, and troubleshooting an FTTx system.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • determine what hardware types, termination and/or splicing methods are appropriate for each part of an FTTP system;

  • understand how cables, pigtails and modules should be routed into closures and hardware;

  • set up and reference test equipment properly;

  • measure system attenuation with a power source and meter;

  • utilize a VFL, Fiber Identifier, and Talk Set for system testing;

  • build a complete FTTP system Including cable preparation, splicing, and termination; and

  • troubleshoot a system to determine fault locations.
