FTTP/PON
Splicing and Termination
Course Number: CSCU 0089
Contact Hours: 16
Prerequisite: CSCU 0088: FTTP/PON Fundamentals
Description
A class that teaches students how
to splice together the optical fiber cables that bring high-bandwidth
service connectivity to millions of homes in the U.S. and around the
world. Students will receive expert lecture and practical hands-on
exposure to various types of splicing technology including mechanical
splicing, single-fiber fusion splicing, 12-fiber ribbon splicing and
FuseLite® “splice-on” optical connectors. Students will also be exposed
to ribbon fiber applications with mid-span access of ribbon cables,
ribbon splitting, and ribbon formation from single-fiber cables.
This is an intermediate to
advanced level class and attending students must have first completed
the FTTP/PON Fundamentals class or have equivalent experience. We
recommend this course for those who plans to install, maintain and/or
repair PON systems and for anyone who needs to be familiar with FTTP
Fusing Splicing and Termination Methods.
- Upon completion of this course, the
student will:
understand different FTTP
termination methods and advantages of each;
- obtain skill in fusion and
mechanical splicing;
- determine which termination
and/or splicing method is appropriate for each part of an FTTP System;
- understand ribbon fiber
applications including
- mid-span access,
- creating ribbons from
single-fiber cables and
- separating ribbons into
individual fibers; and
- utilize fusion-spliced
connectors for the repair or building of patch cords.
