Nonprofit Management Solutions

This program represents a joint venture between Chapman University's San Diego Campus and Nonprofit Management Solutions. It is designed specifically to prepare participants for staff leadership positions within nonprofit organizations. The 12-session course curriculum, offered each Winter-Spring and Fall, examines the fundamental operating principles of a nonprofit business and analyzes practical and proven management techniques along with less traditional, more innovative strategies designed to address management issues in the 21st Century.

Those who enroll in this course can expect to learn more than standardized how-to-manage prescriptions. Each session in the 12-part course series will provide opportunities to explore the theoretical conceptual framework that supports excellence in nonprofit management and is fundamental to real-life problem solving.

Course Session Topics:

  • Nonprofit sector overview, including new pressures and challenges to the nonprofit sector

  • Strategic Governance: board models that work and their impact on executive staff roles

  • Elements of nonprofit business design and development

  • Assessing target markets, trends and client needs

  • Effective program design principles, including evaluation, innovation and measuring impact

  • Diversified resource development strategies

  • Nonprofit financial management, reporting and investment

  • Personnel leadership and human resource management issues

  • Discovering the potential of technology to advance a nonprofit mission

Lead Instructor:  Mark Berger

Mark is Principal of Mark Berger and Assoc, an organizational change consulting firm.  The focus of their service includes building organizational capacity and effectiveness, strategic planning, coaching and team development, and executive search. Mark teaches courses for NonProfit Management Solutions and has also taught at Cal State San Marcos and Austin Community College.
