Chapman University offers a ten-week, on-line, Certificate in Professional Human Resource Management program utilizing the study materials of the Society of Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) Learning System. This university led, on-line program provides participants with the opportunity to interact with colleagues on a formalized academic level, via the Internet.

The course is designed for experienced HR professionals, HR specialists who want to develop a generalist point of view, managers new to the Human Resource field, and non-HR senior managers. It is especially structured to prepare participants for the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) national examination for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) accreditation. However, many students take the course solely for professional development.

With easy to use Internet software, students will retrieve lectures, questions, case studies, exercises and assignments from their instructor, and then review them off-line. They will have access to a range of online research materials, and the opportunity to interact with other successful professionals on the course, gaining from their experience. Throughout the course, the instructor will provide guidance and feedback on student progress. All interaction is conducted asynchronously on the Web site or via e-mail, so students participate at their convenience. The fast paced curriculum will challenge the students’ ability to quickly assimilate new information and prepare them for success on the PHR/SPHR examinations.

Completion of this course does not constitute PHR or SPHR certification or guarantee that you will pass the HRCI exam. However, if you do not pass the exam immediately following the course, you may retake the course for only a small web site access fee. There will be no additional tuition charges. If you re-take the course in the same calendar year, your existing materials will still be valid. If not, it is recommended that you purchase updated materials, but you may use your existing materials if you choose.

The course area of Chapman University’s Online Human Resource Certification course, which uses the SHRM Learning System printed text materials and access to the SHRM web information, provides over two hundred pages of additional, online instructional material. These materials include unique “Instructor Perspectives” for each functional area (comparable to a written lecture, amplifying concepts and ideas), extensive HR cases for discussion at both the individual and group level, weekly exercises and discussion questions, complete answers to case and discussion questions, interaction with your instructor and with online classmates, and weekly quizzes, with instructor’s feedback. Chapman’s approach is to try to give the online student the same level of student and instructor interaction s/he might have in a classroom setting, and to provide numerous additional learning tools that add value to the course.
