Home > to do > Chapman a party school?

Dressing casual and cool. Spraying on the cologne, or perfecting the make-up. Leaving the dorm at 10 p.m., not to come back until the wee hours, drunk and merry from a good party. That may be the reputation of the college norm, and it might be true for some Chapman students.

But not everybody goes that route. Lots of Chapman students are finding good times without Paul’s Cocktails, the District, or the big Animal House parties.

Since Chapman has no fraternity houses or sorority houses, many parties that do happen are organized in individual student homes. This means the parties, on average, are less wild, and less frequent than at the vast majority of other campuses based in big cities.

Colleges across the country— the University of Texas in Austin is a prime example, mentions sophomore Isabella Guiha—are positively legendary for being a breeding ground for wild parties. Such schools have spawned the most infamous of negative party images—scandals, porn women at frat houses, and, of course, “Girls Gone Wild.”

Here at Chapman however, it will be a warm day at the poles before we see one of the GGW busses roll up. More and more, many students say, they are satisfied with small get-togethers that rarely takes them off campus, just enjoying each other’s company in dorm rooms or at on-campus apartments.

“When I came to Chapman last year, I was all set for college. I thought I’d be partying around the clock and just squeezing in time for study… turns out that all my friends are getting together just to study and have a good time,” said sophomore Madison Canagile. She says that she mostly hangs out without leaving campus, and that it’s the same story with her friends.
