What's new in computing at Chapman?

New Campus Network

  • Beckman Hall will be the hub of a new high speed campus network.
  • Fiber optic cable will connect all academic buildings to Beckman Hall.
  • Initial connection speed will be 100Mbps, 10 times the current network speed.
  • Wiring will suppport future speed of 1000Mbps (Gigabit Ethernet).
  • Residence Halls (Pralle-Sodaro and Harris) will be wired by October

New Academic Center Network

  • 21 Academic Centers are now connected to the Orange Campus by frame relay or ISDN circuits
  • Almost all the rest will be connected before the end  of this academic year.

New features of Netscape Communicator

Netscape Communicator 4.06 is a "Suite" of programs built on Internet standards including
  • Navigator - a web browser.
  • Messenger - an email program.
  • Composer - a web page composition and publishing program.
  • Calendar - a scheduling program (compatibel with the Palm Pilot).
 The Communicator programs work with each other and  with the Netscape Suite Spot Servers, including
  • Directory server - a shared directory including address book.
  • Certificate server - which provides authentication and encryption.
  • Calendar server - which coordinates the calendars.

Technology Workshops for faculty are held weekly.
 

Netscape Messenger Features

 
  • Access to University Directory
  • Spell checker
  • Message Filtering
  • Supports both IMAP and POP protocols
  • Supports Digital Signatures and Encrypted Email
  • Note: Users of Microsoft Outlook can also take advantage the University Directory but not the security features of the Certificate Server.
