Submission Guidelines
Dissertations and theses completed in partial fulfillment for an advanced degree (e.g., Doctorate or Master’s) will be made available in print to the public in the Leatherby Libraries with an option for students to submit their dissertation or thesis to the ProQuest database Dissertation and Theses Full-Text, which is published by UMI (University Microfilms Inc., a subsidiary of ProQuest.) Please consult your department to determine if it requires additional copies.
Checklist Requirement
The Dissertation/Thesis Checklist - from this point on referred to as the Checklist - is mandatory for both print and online submissions. The Checklist allows the Committee/Department Chair and the designated library representative to verify that all format requirements have been completed properly. Both the signatures of the Committee/Department Chair and the library representative must be obtained prior to turning in the print version or submitting an online version. This checklist, once signed by the Chair, may be dropped off with any staff member at the Circulation Desk and will be maintained in the library for a period of no longer than three years. The Checklist is available here.
Format Requirement
Refer to the Checklist for specific format requirements. Title, signature, and copyright page samples are provided below.
Steps for Print Submission (please follow these steps in order)
- The student completes the Dissertation/Thesis Checklist, obtains the necessary Committee Chair / Thesis Advisor signature(s), and delivers that checklist to the Dissertation / Thesis administrator: Jeff Sundquist, Leatherby Libraries, 1 University Dr., Orange, CA 92866 or sends a scanned copy to sundquis@chapman.edu. For additional questions, please contact Jeff Sundquist at (714)532-7750.
- The student emails a copy of the dissertation / thesis, as a single Word document, to the Dissertation / Thesis administrator: Jeff Sundquist, at sundquis@chapman.edu.
- The Dissertation / Thesis administrator will provide the final signature on the Dissertation / Thesis Checklist once the dissertation / thesis is evaluated for compliance. If changes are needed, the Dissertation / Thesis administrator will contact the student. If no changes are needed, the administrator delivers the checklist to the Head of Serials and emails the student the OK to print and move on to step 4.
- The student downloads a Dissertation/Thesis Binding Form and fills it out.
- The student pays the total fees listed on the form at the University Cashier’s Office.
- The student submits the Dissertation/Thesis Binding Form and the corresponding number of original copies along with a copy of the receipt from the Cashier’s office to the Head of Serials, located in the Serials Department of the Leatherby Libraries in Room #128 or at the Circulation Desk.
- If you plan to do online submission as well (see steps for that below), DO NOT complete this step until you have scanned your signature page as an image file - you will need to insert that image into your Word document's signature page later for your online submission. This will ensure that that the signatures are included in the electronic version.
- Please remember that the copy provided to the library must be on 24lb or 100% cotton paper
Steps for Online Submission
- Complete the "Steps for Print Submission" listed above.
- The student will go to the following web site, set up an account, and submit a Word Document for conversion to a PDF formatted copy of the paper to ProQuest UMI for online digitization: http://www.etdadmin.com/chapman.
- The student will follow the instructions at the ProQuest UMI web site to submit the dissertation / thesis and make the necessary payment using a credit card.
- After the student successfully submits the dissertation / thesis, it will be forwarded by ProQuest UMI to the specified UMI ETD administrator in the Leatherby Libraries for final approval. Students will receive an email informing them that their submission has completed all the necessary checks.
