The Roger and Roberta Boisjoly
Challenger Disaster Collection

People
Curator: Doug Dechow, PhD, MSLIS
Archivist: Rand Boyd, MLIS, CA

Roger Boisjoly’s biography:
Roger Boisjoly (1938-2012) was a mechanical engineer, fluid dynamicist, and  aerodynamicist who worked for Morton Thiokol. He is best known for raising objections to the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger the day before the loss of the spacecraft and its crew. Mr. Boisjoly’s concerns focused on the predicted launch temperature—the launch of the shuttle was scheduled to occur while the air temperature was below freezing—and its effects on the O-rings in the solid rocket boosters manufactured by his company.

The Collection:
The Boisjoly collection covers Mr. Boisjoly's career at Morton Thiokol and his involvement in the NASA Challenger accident. The collection contains copies of his congressional testimony, testimony from other Challenger Commission participants, and the complete report made by the committee. Mr. Boisjoly's personal and business correspondence as it relates to the Challenger accident and various pieces of Challenger related ephemera are also included in the collection.
