Crafted by the Lobi people of
North Ghana and Southern Burkina Faso
during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Eight ladders, each hewn from a single tree trunk
and hand carved with ascending forked steps.

Milton and Rose Friedman Reading Room
The Leatherby Libraries is proud to be the repository
of the personal library of Milton and Rose Friedman.
Since 2003 the library has received more than
4,000 books and bound volumes.
There are over 175 rare books in the collection,
including a 1707 treatise on the cost of corn in England,
and many archival items, such as
Milton Friedman’s Ph.D. diploma from Columbia University.
The Milton and Rose Friedman Reading Room display
was made possible by a generous gift from Dick and Pat Wallace. |

Children of the Holocaust
Memorial Sculpture
By Chapman University art professor Richard Turner,
this sculpture tells the story of the children of the
Terezin concentration camp in Czechoslovakia
and the tiny tree they nurtured. It also
honors Hershel and Tsalig Leyson,
who were murdered in the Holocaust, and
their surviving brother, Leon Leyson, the
youngest person on “Schindler’s List.”

Elie Wiesel Bust
The bronze bust by artist Miriam Baker honors
Elie Wiesel, recipient of the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize.
Its dedication on April 11, 2005 marked a campus
visit by Prof. Wiesel on the 60th anniversary of his
liberation from the Buchenwald concentration camp.
The bust stands in the entry area to the
Sala and Aron Samueli Holocaust Memorial Library. |
