CHAPMAN HAPPENINGS August 17-23, 1998 Pick Up Your Temporary and Annual Parking Permit Now In an effort to relieve congestion at campus safety and the cashier's office, faculty and staff are encouraged to pick up your free, temporary parking permit and your 1998-99 decal before students return. The temporary permit allows parking in the new structure as soon as it opens (Sept. 7, per Vice President Gary Brahm) through Oct. 31. Beginning Nov. 1, you must display the 1998-99 decal, which costs $40. Campus Safety has a table set up near the Pankey Lounge (Argyros Forum) to dispense the permits. To receive the temporary, simply bring your campus ID. To pick up your 1998-99 decal, you must first pay for it at the Cashier's office (Roosevelt Hall). Bring the receipt and your license plate number to the Campus Safety table. The parking structure is reserved for staff, faculty and visitors. It will provide patrolled, covered parking. The 1998-99 decals are to be placed in the rear window of vehicles. They are a "static cling" design, which will help make things easier for you if you drive different vehicles to work. Campus Safety has published an FAQ sheet which covers most details about parking on- campus. Pick one up when you get your decal, or call Campus Safety at x6763. Say Farewell to Anna Garza A farewell gathering for Anna Garza, who has served as director of the Career Development Center since 1992, will be held Thursday, Aug. 20, 10 a.m. - 12 noon in the Humanities Lounge (Wilkinson Hall). Comments will begin at 11 a.m. Garza's last day is Aug. 21; she leaves us to assume a post with the North Orange County Community College District. Faculty and Staff Notes Dr. Tibor Machan, distinguished fellow of the Leatherby Center, delivered a presentation to the members of the Public Relations Society of America on ethics and public relations, such as determining the most ethical response to a situation where the proper course of action is unclear. Gayle Schoepf, assistant director of church relations, is the chair of the national Hymnal Development Committee for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). As such, she assisted with the completion of the Chalice Hymnal, which is the hymnal being used in most Disciples congregations across the nation. Also, just off the press is the Chalice Hymnal Companion, which features articles on each hymn in the hymnal. Schoepf contributed 35 of the articles. My Summer Vacation ... Professor Anita Storck of the Department of Languages, reports that she spent 2 1/2 weeks on the other side of the world, in Australia. "It was great, I call it the 'summer of animals' -- between the kangaroos, parrots, koalas, wombats, and dolphins, and the walks in the rainforests, it was a very pleasant, nature-filled vacation." Speak Up, Or Wait 'Til Next Year Student Gayathri Nair is the coordinator for the 1998-99 Distinguished Lecture. She reports that "the project is in the initial planning stages for the fall semester, and we are in search of suggestions regarding the theme and possible speakers." She is asking for ideas and input. Among the names that have been suggested already by campus community members are: Rabbi Harold Kushner, William Bennett, Pat Buchannan, Billy Graham, Jimmy Carter, Margaret Thatcher, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and President George Bush. If you have ideas, send them by e-mail to gnair.
