CHAPMAN HAPPENINGS Aug. 24-30, 1998 U.S. News Ranks Chapman a ‘Best Value’ For Second Year Chapman moved up one slot in U.S. News & World Report’s annual "Best College Value" ranking, from eighth place to seventh, in ratings issued Friday, President Jim Doti said. "While our overall rank remained at 16, our total score increased for the seventh consecutive year, as reflected by the fact that we moved up in every qualitative category used in the rankings," he said. Perhaps most impressive was Chapman’s jump from 42 to 25 in the important rating of academic reputation among the 112 Western colleges and universities. "A school’s reputation is determined by surveying the presidents, provosts and admissions officers at other institutions in the same category," Doti pointed out, noting that in 1992 Chapman’s reputation was ranked in the fourth quartile at 90. U.S. News’ "America’s Best Colleges" guide is one of the nation’s most prestigious rankings. And to the entire Chapman community, Doti said, "thanks for everything you do to make possible our unprecedented progress." Take Me Out to the Ball Game -- The Tickets Are Here! The tickets for the Sept. 4 Angels game have arrived! Pick them up at the Calendaring Office (AF third floor), Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (the office is closed from noon to 1 p.m.). Greetings From the 1998-99 AS President Junior Leslie Elliott, a music education and clarinet performance double major, is the president of the 1998-99 Associated Students. Whether you are looking for students to serve on committees, to host events, or to give feedback on academic and co-curricular happenings in your departments, the Associated Students are ready and willing to help! It is my sincere hope that all members of the Chapman family will join the Associated Students in our commitment to working together, in the spirit of service, to enhance our dynamic learning community. Buffet lunch is available for $4. Melrose has written 15 films and is a visiting professor from King Alfred's College. His topic, "Dickens, Gaskell and O.J.Simpson", promises to be intriguing, says Joanie Sailer. For more details, call her in the provost's office, x 6775. New Classes Offer Interesting Approaches, Topics Among the new class choices Chapman students will have this year are many that use interesting learning approaches and/or offer subject matter sure to stimulate inquiring minds. FYI, here are a couple of selections: "Turbo English 104, Writing about Literature" -- by Professor Pamela Ezell: Most of the reading material is in the form of "e-texts," available online via the Internet. Students will use an electronic bulletin to communicate with the professor and to each other about various discussion topics, and will submit their papers via e-mail for peer and professorial review prior to submitting the papers for a grade. The class also features "virtual office hours," evenings when Prof. Ezell will be available for help on-line. "Students want feedback about their writing, or they have questions about assignments," says Prof. Ezell, "and they can't always time their needs to fit into a class session or a face-to-face conference. The computer is a great way to augment the time we have in class or on campus." Sociology of Gangs and Gang Behavior -- by Dr. Bonnie Ach: Students will meet experts from the different fields of criminal investigation, including FBI agents and community workers. In preparation for the class, Dr. Ach, Ph.D., has received California- approved instruction in street gang training and participated in interviews and ride-alongs this summer. Rape and Sexual Assault Prevention Campaign Rape and Sexual Assault Prevention Campaign is scheduled to take place September 1-3, from 11 -1 p.m. in the Pankey Lounge.
