Td 100 Introduction to Technical Theatre
A course designed to provide students with an overview and theoretical exploration of all non-performance aspects of theatre production. Areas of study include: introduction to production design and construction including scenery, costumes, lighting and sound. Theatrical production management, labor, facility, money and time budgeting, and the importance of communication and collaboration required to mount an effective production. This course carries a lab component. Fee: $75. (Offered every semester.) 3 credits.
Td 105 Theatre and Dance Production I
This course gives students practical experience in the technical areas of the production program. Students will be given a production assignment and will perform specific activities related to that technical area. Students meet as a group three times during the semester and meet individually with the instructor several times during the semester. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credits. (Offered every semester.) H credit.
Td 110 Introduction to Acting
A beginning acting course for students not majoring in theatre performance. The course includes relaxation work, ensemble exercises, beginning scene work, and an introduction to character building. (Offered every semester.) 3 credits.
Td 113 Theatre and Dance Performance I
Prerequisite, audition or instructors consent. Designed
for those students who have been given increased production or performance
responsibilities in theatre and dance productions. Graded on a pass/no
pass basis. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credits. (Offered every
semester.) 1 credit.
Td 119 Introduction to Voice and Movement
A study of the fundamentals of stage movement and vocal production for Theatre and Dance majors only. Course work includes ensemble building, Alexander technique (movement), Linklater exercises (voice work), Strassberg relaxation exercises and the creation of physical and vocal warm-ups. Performance majors are strongly encouraged to take this course during their freshman year. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits.
Td 130 Contemporary Dance Styles
(Same as Pa 130.) A dance activity class designed to teach participants contemporary social and commercial dance styles. Street dance, funk, hip hop, and other current dance forms will be among dance styles selected for instruction. (Offered every semester.) H credit.
Td 132 Modern Dance I
(Same as Pa 132.) This course is designed for the student with little or no prior experience with modern dance techniques, exploring a variety of styles. Basic experimental, improvisational, and choreographic skills are developed. (Offered every semester.) 1 credit.

(Same as Pa 134.) Beginning study of jazz dance. (Offered every semester.) 1 credit.

An introduction to social dancing with an emphasis on American ballroom dances fox trot, waltz, swing, and Latin ballroom dances cha cha, mambo, and tango. (Offered every semester.) H credit.
Td 150 Introduction to the Theatre CH I
A study of theatre as popular entertainment and as a reflection of world social and cultural expression from its beginning to the present. The relationship between theatre practice in several countries is explored, and the development of philosophy and style as product of religious influence and historic events is emphasized. Td 155 Introduction to Theatre Studies
For theatre and dance majors only. A beginning study of theatre as an art form and popular entertainment. The emphasis is on analysis of dramatic styles, a brief synopsis of theatre history, as well as discussion and criticism of contemporary theatre practices. Fee: $75. Td 201 Stagecraft
Prerequisites, Td 100 and 105. A course in the craft and
methodology of scenic production for the stage. This course carries
a lab component. Fee: $75. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits.
Td 202 Theatrical Makeup
An introduction to theatrical makeup. Students study stage makeup design and artistic skills including both painting and three dimensional makeup. Often there are special opportunities for practical experience on actual productions. Theatre majors are advised to take the course in their freshman or sophomore year. Fee: $75. Td 204 Theatrical Costume Techniques
Prerequisite, Td 100. This course is designed as an introduction
to the theatrical costuming process. The course gives students training
in costume construction techniques, fitting, maintenance, tools, and
other responsibilities involved in theatrical costuming. This course
carries a laboratory component where students will gain hands-on experience.

Td 207 Lighting for the Stage
Prerequisite, Td 100. This course presents students with
the fundamentals of stage lighting. A detailed description of electrical
theory, instrumentation, equipment and an overview of the lighting
design process are utilized. This course carries a laboratory component
where students will gain hands-on experience. Fee: $75. (Offered fall

Td 212 Tai-Chi for Theatre
Study in movement of the Yang Tai-Chi form. The first semester consists of the first twenty-two movements and the second semester consists of the remaining twenty-two movements for a total of forty-four movements. It is strongly recommended that A and B be taken consecutively. (Offered every semester.) H credit.
Td 219 Acting Fundamentals
Prerequisite, Td 119. Course work includes beginning scene
work, Stanislavski terminology and technique, playing to type, beginning
rehearsal techniques, emotional realism, and performance analysis.

Td 251 Humanities Through the Arts
Designed to promote appreciation of the forms, styles, and media of music, art, dance, drama, cinema, and architecture. (Offered only at Academic Centers.) 3 credits.
Td 259 Theatre Management
An investigation into the development, structure, and planning for not-for-profit performing arts institutions. Strategic planning, public relations, marketing principles for dance, opera, theatre, and music institutions are stressed. Investigation of board structure and membership is also included. Practical experience in front of house management, ticketing, season subscriptions, and press relations will also be investigated. (Offered spring semester, alternate years.) 3 credits.
Td 290 Independent Internship
Additional credit opportunities are available for students eager to develop skills by associating with professional production groups. Internships could be anything from theatre house management to dance teaching. Consult advisors. (Offered every semester.) 1-3 credits.
Td 301 Drafting for the Stage
Prerequisite, Td 201. This course is designed to give
students experience in the drafting and construction drawing techniques
common in theatre production. Historical discussion of the art and
craft of theatrical scenic production and current trends in theatre
technology. Also included is a discussion of the use of computers
and CAD in theatrical production. Fee: $75. (Offered spring semester.)

Td 303 Organization of Dance Production
Prerequisite, Td 100. Designed to prepare the student
to organize a dance production in various settings. Incorporates both
theoretical and hands-on aspects of production management, fundraising
and grant writing, publicity, lighting, make-up, costumes, sound and
video systems. Lab experience in technical theatre is included. (Offered
fall semester, alternate years.) 3 credits.
Td 304 Theatrical Costuming
Prerequisites, Td 105, 204. An intermediate level course
in the craft of theatrical costuming. Students will be exposed to
patterning, drafting, advanced construction techniques, and costume
crafts. This course carries a laboratory component where students

Prerequisites, Td 100, 105, Art 111. The study of design
from script analysis to design presentation. Study units include design
process, drawing the scenic sketch, model building, plans and elevations,
and Computer Aided Design. (Offered spring semester, alternate years.)

Td 310 Expression Theatrale (Acting: Theatrical Expression)
Prerequisites, Language levels applicable: Elementary III
(1st degree), Intermediate I, II, III (2nd degree), Proficiency (3rd
degree). This course is only offered at the College of International
de Cannes, France. Taught in French and offered only at the College
International de Cannes, France. This course meets four to six hours
per week and emphasizes rhythm and articulation of the French language
employing a different, original script each month, written
by the professor. Dramatic sketches, designed with roles suitable
for all participants, use expressions and themes drawn from daily
life and emphasize the sound of French as it is spoken. The number
of hours per week is determined by the role assigned. Students who
enroll in this course must pay a supplementary fee to the College
(approximately $150 times two or three optional sessions per semester.)

Td 311 Rehearsal and Performance
Prerequisites, two courses in basic acting skills, Td 119,
219. Designed to provide the actor with the opportunity to develop
new techniques for performance as well as understand the rehearsal
process. It allows the student to synthesize the techniques learned
in acting classes by providing a practical laboratory approach to
the craft of acting. May be repeated once for elective credit. (Offered

Td 312 Movement for the Performer
Prerequisites, Td 119, 219. Exploration of advanced
stage movement based on work of masters such as Suzuki, Alexander,
Feldenkrais. May include physical character development, circus

production and stage usage. Integrates a variety of productions
processes including Linkletter, Bery, Alexander, yoga, Mentastics,
Feldenkrais, and bioenergetics to further develop alignment, respiration,
phonation, resonation, and articulation for the professional voice
user. How the voice works; vocal health; warm-up techniques, current
medical and psychological advances in the use and abuse of voice

An introduction to the art of dramatic writing for the stage
in which the student will study structure, theme, and character
while writing and polishing a one-act play. Students will work one-to-one

This course is designed to provide students with experience in dance

Td 351 Dance History I: Origins to 1700s
This course is a comprehensive survey of dance from its prehistoric and tribal origins in world cultures, and through history to the Renaissance and early ballet. Studies will include the relation of dance to religion and myth, as a reflection of social and cultural attitudes and mores, and its relation to other art forms. Td 352 Dance History II: 1700s to Present

A comprehensive comparative study of dance from the Renaissance
through the 20th century. Included in the studies will be ballet,
modern dance, musical theatre, jazz, and comparative contemporary
cultures. Emphasis will be placed on dance as a continually emerging
art. Course material will also include dance as a reflection of
social and cultural attitudes and mores, and its relation to other

Td 357 Music for Dancers
A study of selected music fundamentals, emphasizing rhythm skills, structural analysis, and basic musical vocabulary. Additional activities include an introduction to historical trends and styles in music, movement exercises as an integrated component of the skill-building process, and working with musicians. or by instructors consent. An explorative movement and
analytical study into the art of making dances. The course concentrates
on the four basic elements of choreography: space, shape, time,
energy, and will include discussions and readings about the creative

Td 381 Choreography II
Prerequisites, Td 132, 134, 136 or concurrent enrollment
or instructors consent. A continuation of the choreographic
goals of Td 380. This course will emphasize choreography forms,
the influence of music on movement and evaluation process.
An emphasis on sources of creative resources for choreography will
be explored through reading, discussion, and improvisation. (Offered

Td 388 Directing for the Theatre I
Prerequisites, Td 105, 155, 219, 319. A close, practical
examination of the craft of play direction. Production techniques
are covered as an essential part of the overall subject. The student
director solves specific problems through the direction of scenes.

consent. Continues the practical examination of the craft of
play direction. Continues production techniques as an essential

Td 404 Theatrical Costume Design
Prerequisites, Td 304, 305. This course offers the student
an opportunity to function as costume designer for a realized production
in the Theatre and Dance Department. Included in study are script
analysis, the production meeting, producing costume design sketches,
supervising the construction of costumes, and the technical rehearsal
process. Personal instruction and laboratory hours are required.

Td 407 Advanced Lighting Design for the Stage
Prerequisites, Td 305, 307. This course offers the student
an opportunity to function as lighting designer for a realized production
in the Theatre and Dance Department. Included in study are script
analysis, the production meeting, drafting the light plot, preparing
the paperwork, supervising the hang and focus, cueing the production
and the technical rehearsal process. Personal instruction and laboratory
hours are required. (Offered on a reading and conference basis.)

Td 408 Advanced Scenic Design for the Stage
Prerequisites, Td 201, 305, 308. This course offers
the student an opportunity to function as a scenic designer for
a realized production in the Theatre and Dance Department. Included
in study are script analysis, the production meeting, media skills,
presentation methods, meeting of deadlines, supervising the construction
and painting of scenery, and props and the technical rehearsal process.
Personal instruction and laboratory hours are required. (Offered

Td 409 Special Studies in Theatre Technology
Prerequisites, Td 100, 105, and instructors consent.
This course is offered to cover one of many areas of interest for
the theatre technician. Areas of study may include: model building,
scene painting, special effects for the stage, specialty costumes,
CAD and 3D modeling. (Offered as needed.) 3 credits.
Td 415 Advanced Acting Styles
Prerequisites, Td 315, 319. Advanced work in basic acting
style including work from Shakespeare, or Commedia dell Arte,
Shaw, Coward, Moliere, Brecht, and Restoration. All periods and
style will be utilized in this investigation of problems and techniques
particular to each period and style. (Offered as needed.) 3 credits.
Td 416 Advanced Acting Shakespeare
Prerequisite, Td 316 and instructors consent. Designed
to provide the student with an advanced approach to playing Shakespeare.
Particular emphasis will be placed on research of the style, historical
drama, and Shakespeares place in theatre. Involvement in modern
applications of Shakespeare, the explication and scoring of text
through the investigation of poetic speech and use of heightened
language, experienced by acting and directing Shakespearean scenes.

Td 417 Audition Workshop
Prerequisites, Td 315, 319. Preparation and practical
experience in auditioning for professional theatre, film/television,
and related media. Students need to spend additional money to prepare
professional pictures and résumés. (Offered spring

Td 418 Acting for the Camera II
Prerequisites, Td 119, 219, 318, 319. Focus on advanced
acting techniques for film and television. The student will participate
in various exercises and perform on camera in three scenes with
student directors. May be repeated once for elective credit. (Offered

Td 419 Text Analysis and Scene Study
Prerequisites, Td 119, 219, 319 and audition. This course,
designed for B.F.A. candidates with an emphasis in Theatre Performance
or Dance/Theatre Performance, is analysis driven. The course explores
various techniques for script analysis and scene study with a focus
on exploration of rehearsal options over performance demands. (Offered
fall semester.) 3 credits.
Td 420 Special Studies in Dance Technique
Prerequisite, completion of level II technique classes or
instructors consent. For intermediate and advanced dance
majors, this course is designed to provide greater depth and breadth
of instruction and exploration of dance topics and techniques. Topics
will include cutting-edge study with acclaimed artists in modern
dance, jazz, ballet, partnering, movement analysis systems, and
improvisation. (Offered every semester.) 1 credit.
Td 426 Advanced Playwriting
Prerequisite, Td 326 or instructors consent. Advanced
study in the techniques of dramatic writing. It is expected the
student will have already written a play and understands the principles
of structure and character. Special problems, like flashbacks or
soliloquies, and modern approaches to writing for theatre will be
covered as the student writes a full-length play in a one-to-one
situation with their instructor. If the course is repeated for credit
the student must begin and complete an entirely new work. (Offered

Td 432 Modern Dance III
(Same as Pa 432.) Prerequisite, Td 232. This course
is designed for the advanced modern dancer. Experiences in dance
technique, creative movement, and dance composition are included.

to educate the student with methods of teaching dance in secondary
school, community college, university, and studio settings. Included
in this course is field experience, teaching strategies and innovations,
and current information on physical training and fitness. (Offered

Td 453 Dramatic Literature and History I
Prerequisites, Eng 104, Td 155 or the equivalent. An
intensive study of the theatrical history and plays from the classical
Greek to pre-Ibsen realism. Plays to be studied include dipus,
Second Shepherds Play, King Lear, among others. (Offered fall
semester.) 3 credits.
Td 454 Dramatic Literature and History II
Prerequisite, Td 155 or Eng 200/300 level literature course.
An intensive study of the theatrical history and plays from pre-Ibsen
realism to the contemporary period. Plays to be studied include
Hedda Gabler, The Cherry Orchard, Waiting for Godot, The Caretaker,
among others. (Offered spring semester.) 3 credits.
Td 455 Topics in Theatre History
This is a general syllabus; each topic will have a specific syllabi and bibliography. Prerequisites, the equivalent Td 155 or Eng 200/300 level literature course. The study of specific time periods, styles of works of directors, actors, or writers that span theatre history. Research and analysis of key themes, humor, wit, tragedy, theatrical movements, and presentational styles relating to specific topics. Sample topics might include Shepard, Williams, the group theatre, musical theatre, restoration theatre, medieval theatre, commedia del arte, or epic theatre. (Offered as needed.) 3 credits.
Td 456 History of Media Performance
Prerequisites, Td 219, 318, 319. A detailed study of
the history of performance in motion pictures and television from
the invention of cinema to the present day. The course will consider
styles and approaches to screen acting through study of well-known
performances. (Offered spring semester, alternate years.) 3 credits.
Td 458 Applied Kinesiology for Dancers
Prerequisite, Biol 210. The study of the musculoskeletal
system as a mechanism for motion. Emphasis is placed upon the learning
of skeletal muscles and action as they apply to dance movement.
This course does not fulfill the kinesiology requirement for KINE
majors. This course also includes a lab requirement. (Offered fall
semester.) 4 credits.
Td 481 Choreography Workshop
Prerequisite, Td 381 or instructors consent. Creation
of dances around a theme utilizing large and/or small groups as
well as solo composition. Designed to lead choreographers through
the process of building dances to the level of the performances.
Completed choreography will be presented in concert. (Offered spring
semester.) 1-3 credits.
Td 489 Theatre Directing Workshop
Prerequisites, Td 219, 319, 389. Students in the workshop
will produce and direct a bill of one-act plays during the fall
semester only. Student responsibilities cover all aspects of production
as well as directing. Enrollment in this course is strictly limited
to five students. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits.

(Same as Td 290.) 1-3 credits.
Td 498 Senior Project
Prerequisite, students must have their senior project proposal
approved by the department before enrolling. Td 498 can only
be taken in the senior year, and the student should enroll the first
semester of that year. Senior students may assume responsibility
for projects in theatre, media or dance performance, playwriting,
choreography, directing, costume, lighting or scenic design, technical
theatre or research in dramatic literature and theatre history.
Students must receive approval of their written proposal before
enrollment in the course. (Course is offered on a reading and conference
basis.) 2-3 credits.
Td 499 Individual Study
Individual research and projects. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credits. 1-3 credits.
