Mus 100 Rudiments of Music
A study of the rudiments of music; pitch and rhythmic notation, scales, key signatures, intervals, triads, basic music reading skills and aural skills. For non-music majors and pre-music majors. (Offered irregularly.) 1 credit.


Mus 101 Introduction to Music
For non-music majors only. A course designed to give the student a grasp of the major styles and trends of Western music, from Gregorian chant to the present. (Offered every semester.) 3 credits.


Mus 102 Compendium of Western Music History
For music majors only. A course designed to give the music student a grasp of the major styles and trends of Western music, from Gregorian chant to the present. (Offered spring semester.) 3 credits.


Mus 133 Theory I
Scales, intervals, triads, inversions, non-harmonic tones, analysis, ear training, sight singing, keyboard harmony. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits.

Continuation of Theory I. (Offered spring semester.) 3 credits.


Mus 222 Musical Cultures of the World CH II
A survey of non-western musical traditions with focus on Africa (section 1), Asia (section 2) and Latin America (section 3). (Offered in sequence every semester.) 3 credits.

Mus 225 Diction for Singers
An in-depth study of the International Phonetic Alphabet and its pronunciation and application for singers to English, Italian, French, and German. (Offered spring semester.) 2 credits.


Mus 226 Vocal Pedagogy
Prerequisite, minimum of two years of vocal study. Fundamentals of vocal pedagogy with emphasis on historical background, comparative vocal methods, physiology, voice classification, and practical application to teaching individuals of all ages. (Offered fall semester, alternate years.) 2 credits.


Mus 227 Song Literature
A study of selected song literature primarily from Germany, France, England, and the United States. Includes study of biographical information on selected composers and poets, style, and interpretation. (Offered fall semester, alternate years.) 1 credit.


Mus 228 Guitar Repertoire
A study of selected literature for the guitar, lute, and vihuela; includes early lute and vihuela music of the Renaissance, four- and five-course Baroque guitar, and the six-string classical guitar from the early 19th century to the present. (May be repeated for credit.) 1 credit.


Mus 233 Theory III
Continuation of Theory II, including 9th, 11th, 13th chord structures, modulation, altered chords, analysis, advanced ear training, sight singing, keyboard harmony. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits.


Mus 234 Theory IV
Continuation of Theory III, including chromatic harmony and the harmonic and contrapuntal devices of the 20th century. (Offered spring semester.) 3 credits.


Mus 261 Introduction to Music Therapy I
This first course in music therapy is designed to provide a broad overview of the field of music therapy, including history, theory, and current practice. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits.


Mus 262 Introduction to Music Therapy II
Prerequisite, Mus 261 and instructor’s consent. This class will focus on the continued development of clinical skills in music therapy. The emphasis will be on music, musical materials and (functional) guitar, keyboard and vocal performance as they are used in a music therapy setting. (Offered spring semester.) 3 credits.


Mus 301 Music History and Literature I
Prerequisite, instructor’s consent. Students study the period of antiquity, Middle Ages, and Renaissance. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits.

Mus 327 Modal Counterpoint
Contrapuntal techniques as practiced by composers of the 16th century. (Offered fall semester.) 2 credits.


Mus 328 Tonal Counterpoint
Contrapuntal techniques as practiced by composers of the 18th century. (Offered spring semester.) 2 credits.


Mus 330 Form and Harmonic Analysis
Students analyze simple structural elements, binary and ternary forms, and larger forms from the Baroque to the first half of the 20th century. (Offered fall semester.) 2 credits.


Mus 361 Introduction to Music Therapy III
Prerequisite, Mus 262 and instructor’s consent. Provides an opportunity for each student to develop clinical skills in music therapy. This class is the third in a four-semester sequence of classes, all of which are focused on this goal. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits.


Mus 362 Influence of Music on Behavior
Review of historical, physiological, sociological, and psychological data concerning music and behavior. Students also explore uses and effects of music on individuals and groups. The course provides an environment for each student to learn about and experience the use of music as an instrument of change. (Offered spring semester.) 3 credits.

Mus 377 Music Composition
Prerequisite, instructor’s consent. A structured approach to composing music, from small to larger complex forms. (Offered every semester.) (May be repeated for credit.)

Basic techniques of baton, score study, analysis, and interpretation appropriate for leading choral and instrumental groups. (Offered fall semester.) 2 credits.


Mus 455 Music for the Elementary Classroom
Not open to music majors. Materials and methods for elementary school music teaching. Laboratory and accompanying lectures, demonstration teaching, and elementary classroom observation. (Offered irregularly.) 3 credits.


Mus 457 Practicum in Choral Literature and Pedagogy
Intensive study of literature appropriate for high school choirs and smaller vocal ensembles. (Offered every third semester.) 3 credits.


Mus 458 Practicum in Instrumental Literature and Pedagogy
Intensive study of literature appropriate for junior and senior high school bands and orchestras. (Offered every third semester.) 3 credits.


Mus 459 Practicum in Elementary School Literature and Pedagogy
Study of literature and materials appropriate for elementary, middle, and junior high school classrooms. (Offered every third semester.) 3 credits.


Mus 461 Psychology of Music
Prerequisite, Phys 203 Acoustics of Music. The goal of this course is to provide information and experience in the study of measurable responses to music such as changes in physical and cognitive functioning. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits.


Mus 463 Clinical Experience
Prerequisite, Mus 462 and instructor’s consent. To provide an opportunity for each student to conduct music therapy sessions in order to gain experience in working directly with clients; and to develop skill in observing and understanding behaviors in both individual (one-to-one) or group interaction. (Offered every semester.) (May be repeated for credit.) 1 credit.


Mus 495 Music Therapy Internship
This is a six-month, 1040-hour internship of clinical experience arranged through an American Music Therapy Association approved institution and the director of music therapy at Chapman University. It is to be done after all other academic requirements for the Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy are completed. (Offered every semester.) 3 credits.


Mus 496 Seminar
Study of individual major composers or specific periods. Subjects vary. (Offered irregularly.) 2 credits.


Mus 497 Private Instruction
Special study in music history, theory, composition, or conducting. Fee: $80 per credit. (Offered every semester.) 1-3 credits.

Applied Courses
All undergraduate private instruction courses carry one credit for a half-hour weekly lesson per semester (Fee: $105), or two credits for one hour of instruction (Fee: $210). All class instruction in piano, guitar, or voice carries one credit per semester (Fee: $55.) All applied courses may be repeated for credit.

Mus 211
Prerequisite, Mus 113 or equivalent or instructor’s permission. This is an intermediate course in playing the guitar and is a continuation of the beginning guitar class, Mus 113. Areas covered include: accompaniment styles, strumming patterns, picking patterns, jazz chords, bar chords, open tunings, playing by ear, transposition, and sight-reading (melodies and two voices.)


Mus 224 Introduction to Music Technology
Prerequisites, knowledge of music notation and Cpsc 200, or instructor’s consent. Students will be introduced to developments in the area of electronic music, computer uses in music, the musical instrument digital interface (MIDI), multimedia production, and sound recording and editing techniques. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits.
