Lbst 210 Music and Movement: The Human Expression
Prerequisite, Kine 207, Kine 162. Through this foundation course, a study will be made of the origins and development of dance and music as an integral part of our human heritage. This course will explore the connected relationships of movement and music as transmitters of culture, both influencing and reacting to social, economic and political changes throughout history. Students will learn to recognize, appreciate, and build upon this music and dance heritage as they explore ways to apply these components in the elementary classroom. The course will emphasize discovery methods, which connect the art with the learning process. Videotape viewing, audiotape listening and/or applied arts activities weekly. (Offered spring semester.) 3 credits.


Lbst 301 Models of Interdisciplinary Thinking
This course focuses on students’ acquiring, organizing, and presenting material from various disciplines in order to integrate knowledge about an assigned theme or topic, with an eye to the senior capstone experience. Students will formulate their own models of inquiry and practice and present their findings and conclusions for class assessment. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits.


Lbst 401 The Tapestry of Liberal Education
Prerequisite, Lbst 301. This senior capstone course in Liberal Studies relies on cumulative and integrative skills in analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Each participant selects and prepares a portfolio of their Liberal Studies experience, demonstrating evidence of learning which addresses the Subject Matter Standards for Elementary School Teachers as prescribed by the State of California Commission of Teacher Credentialing (1996). The completed project will be facilitated and approved by the Lbst 401 faculty member and presented to peers and faculty as the student’s culminating work in the Liberal Studies program and will constitute the final portfolio increment of the Liberal Studies student. (Offered spring semester.) 3 credits.
