Jpn 101 , 102 Elementary Japanese I, II
Prerequisite for 102: C- in 101 or instructors consent.
Students are methodically introduced to the language and culture through
hearing, speaking, reading, and writing Japanese. Emphasis is on practical
understanding of the language through communicative activities. Jpn
103/104 must be taken concurrently with Jpn 101/102. (Offered every
year.) 3-3 credits.
Jpn 103 , 104 Japanese Calligraphy
Students learn three basic Japanese writing systems, Hiragana, Katakana, and beginning Kanji, using traditional brush, ink, rice paper, and pens. Students will create their own works of art incorporating Japanese characters as words, expressions, and poems as a final product. Different styles of Japanese calligraphy and its history. Jpn 101/102 must be taken concurrently with Jpn 103/104. (Offered every year.) 1-1 credit.
Jpn 201 Intermediate Japanese I
Prerequisites, Jpn 102 or instructors consent. While
mastering the intermediate vocabulary and structural patterns, the
student will gain an understanding of the circumstances in which particular
expressions might be used. By practicing the substitution exercises
for the short conversations, the student will develop skills to apply
patterns they have learned in different occasions which he or she
encounters in real life. 3 credits.
Jpn 345 Japanese Conversation
Prerequisite, Jpn 201 or equivalent proficiency. Designed
for students who have a foundation in grammar, vocabulary and written
Japanese. Students perform exercises in conversational Japanese through
activities such as discussions and debates on current news, situational
role playing and oral presentations. Selected films and videos on
Japanese society and culture are presented. 3 credits.
Jpn 347 Business Japanese
Prerequisites, Jpn 201 or instructors consent. Business
Japanese is designed for the student who wants to learn business communication
skills. This course will assist the student in mastering Japanese
in a business setting through oral practice, role-playing and exercises.
This course will also provide the student with abundant background
knowledge and information about Japanese culture, customs, and business
protocol through lectures, videos and discussions. (Offered during
Interterm and on sufficient demand.) 3 credits.
