Fren 101, 102 Elementary French I, II

Prerequisite for 102, C- in 101 or instructor's consent. Students gain mastery of a basic vocabulary and structural patterns, pronunciation, an overview of French geography and social customs. Two hours per week lab required. (Offered every semester.) 3-3 credits.

Fren 201, 202 Intermediate French I, II

Prerequisite, Fren 102 or equivalent. The course covers conversation, concepts of grammar in review, composition, cultural and literary readings. Two hours per week of lab are required. (Offered every year.) 3-3 credits.

Fren 341 Literary and Cinematographic Images of the French Past: An Interdisciplinary Inquiry

Literary and Cinematographic Images of the French Past is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of French cinema, history, civilization, culture, and literature. Cinema and literature have always had an enormous impact upon the ever-changing nature of popular culture. This seminar proposes to explore the manner in which these two popular art forms influence the very nature of French cultural identity. 3 credits.

Fren 343 Advanced Grammar and Composition

Prerequisite, Fren 202 or equivalent. Detailed review of grammar, and exercises in various styles of writing.

Fren 345, 346 French Conversation

Prerequisite, Fren 102 or equivalent. Students perform exercises in conversational French and have discussions based on current activities and periodicals. Films are presented. 3 credits.

Fren 347 Business French

Prerequisite, Fren 102 or equivalent. Students learn a specialized vocabulary dealing with all aspects of business. Use of forms, letters, and other documents and practice in preparing correspondence of various types is covered. (Offered on sufficient demand.) 3 credits.

Fren 475 French Literature

Prerequisite, Fren 102 or equivalent. Students read and analyze selected works from representative authors in the novel, drama, and poetry. Content varies each time offered. May be repeated for credit. 3 credits.

Fren 478 French Civilization

Prerequisite, Fren 102 or equivalent. The study of the geography, political history, and cultural development of France, its position in the modern world, its role overseas. 3 credits.

Fren 499 Individual Study

Prerequisite, instructor's consent. Designed to meet specific needs of superior students. 1-3 credits.
