Esl 099 Introduction
to Composition
A required course
for all non-native speakers of English who show need for practice
in concept formation processes and clarity of expression. Perception
as a first step to successful expository writing is emphasized.
Intensive practice in writing, revising compositions and essays
includes attention to structure, mechanics, and form. (Offered as
needed.) 3 non-degree credits.

Rhetoric
Successful completion
of Esl 103 is required for entry to Esl 204 and is a prerequisite
for all other English courses. Emphasis is on analytical thinking,
writing skills with primary attention to mastery of essay models,
the research paper, reading assignments in a broad range of essay
modes with exercises, and critical evaluation. (Equivalent of
Eng 103.) (Offered every semester.) 3 credits.

Language and Culture in Literature
Advanced language
development through reading and writing about literature is presented
in thematic segments reşecting values and usage. Emphasis is on
understanding and using figurative, rhetorical, and other sophisticated
language forms in various genres from various cultures. Research
papers done on literature may be used to meet the undergraduate
degree requirement in English. (Equivalent of Eng 104.) (Offered
every semester.) 3 credits.
Esl 300 Successful
Writing for International Students
A composition
course designed for international students who need to refine and
develop their skills in writing for college credit courses. This
class also benefits those who received a fail or deficient on their
Junior Writing Proficiency Examination. Identifying and correcting
specific writing problems and editing skills are emphasized. Students
also read effectively written essays in a variety of academic areas.
