Bachelor of Arts

Liberal studies is the major of choice for the individual wanting to teach in an elementary classroom. As a liberal studies student, you will encounter new horizons of learning, leading to a lifetime of sharing with young minds. Whether you are a freshman or a transfer student from another college, your decision to enroll in Chapman University's Liberal Studies Program will enhance and reward your scholarship, creativity, and commitment.

This major has three emphases: the Subject Matter Competency (MSAT exempt) Emphasis, the Multiple Subjects (MSAT required) Emphasis, and the Central Subjects Emphasis.

The Subject Matter Competency Emphasis has been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to meet the requirements for the Subject Matter Program. This emphasis, formerly called the Waiver Program, encompasses college instruction in the subjects that are commonly taught in California elementary schools, and is designed to prepare the student for entry into a credentialing program.

For those who transfer from a community college or enter the program with a large number of credits, we offer an alternative course of study called Multiple Subjects Emphasis. This program affords greater flexibility in the choice of courses, and eases the transition for the student. Although this emphasis, formerly called the Non-Waiver Program, is also designed for students preparing to teach elementary school, this emphasis requires students to take the MSAT before entering a credentialing program.

Other students who are not preparing to teach may also choose to major in liberal studies. Their goal is to become acquainted with a comprehensive range of academic subjects and disciplines. Many businesses and some graduate programs appreciate the broad-based education and strength in writing offered in the Central Subjects Emphasis.

All of Chapman's liberal studies majors are encouraged to participate in the extracurricular activities sponsored by affiliate programs and departments, such as the Study

Abroad opportunities and the various internships and cooperative education experiences. Participation in student governance and on-campus and community service organizations also helps to complete a rounded education.

The coordinator of liberal studies is Professor Donna Cucunato.

The courses listed below may fulfill both major and general education requirements. All courses taken in each emphasis must be passed with a grade of "C" or better. Every student in the liberal studies program who must take a math course at Chapman is required to take the Math I Placement Exam.
