Bachelor
of Arts
The department
of communications offers the bachelor of arts degree with emphases
in four growing communications fields--advertising, mass communications,
public relations, and speech communication. Strongly interdisciplinary,
the students' broad liberal arts based curriculum will prepare them
for communications careers in a wide variety of fields or for further
study at the graduate level.
Communications
emphases include a range of study, which is in some instances distinct
and in other ways overlapping. All four emphases stress the development
of effective communication skills. They are rooted in strong writing,
speaking, and an understanding of visual design and æsthetics.
Students use state-of-the-art technology to create messages in a
wide variety of forms, from print and video to multi-media.
Along with the
development of professional skills in communications, these emphases
are designed to build the student's understanding of the historical,
theoretical, critical, and ethical aspects of communication.
Advertising
prepares students to work in the creative (design or copy), media,
and/or account management side of the field. Both creative and business-oriented,
this emphasis stresses an understanding of the business world, including
marketing and product positioning, as well as strong writing skills
in print and broadcast media.
Mass Communication
offers students a critical and analytical view of one of the most
powerful forces at work in world culture today. It prepares students
to spot cultural and technological trends which drive the mass media.
Public Relations
students study this advocacy profession which builds relationships
between organizations, both corporate and non-profit, and the people
they serve. Students will develop professional communication skills
for print and broadcast media.
Speech Communication
includes the classical art of disciplined thinking, debate, public
speaking, written and electronic message preparation. Students prepare
for a wide diversity of careers from education to business and from
politics to a variety of service industries.
Planning is
important in these emphases. Each student is encouraged to seek
advisement with an academic advisor in the department to correctly
sequence the required courses. Transfer students must have previous
communications and business credits evaluated by the department.

Emphasis
in Mass Communications
Nowhere is Marshall
McLuhan's concept of the Global Village more evident than in the
world-encompassing ubiquity of the engines of Mass Communications--newspapers,
magazines, book publishing, radio, television, and the World Wide
Web. By focusing on trend-analysis, this emphasis prepares the student
to be an informed, critcally-thinking consumer of the messages generated
by the mass media, or a participant in the creation of these messages.
