Bachelor

Bachelor
of Fine Arts
The department
of art offers a comprehensive and balanced program that includes
the traditional studio arts, the academic sphere of art history,
and professional courses that will prepare students for careers
in the field of graphic design.
Housed in the Moulton Center, the department provides studios for
sculpture, painting, drawing, and ceramics, a photography lab, computer
center, and graphic design facilities. The Guggenheim Gallery offers
excellent facilities for student exhibitions and also hosts a wide
variety of visiting artists.
At the heart of the art majors experience is ArtCore. A course
taken over four semesters, ArtCore is a team-taught seminar for
the exchange of opinion and information, and an opportunity to meet
professional artists.
Art majors are encouraged to take advantage of Chapman's Study Abroad
programs. Appropriate courses may be substituted for courses in
the major with departmental approval.

The Foundation
Year
The Foundation
Year is a first-year program for all freshmen who intend to major.
The program provides the basis for a sound fundamental education
in the arts within a liberal arts curriculum.
During this
year, students take a mix of art classes that expose them to a wide
range of techniques and philosophies, as well as building analytical
and critical thinking skills that help them make connections between
the visual arts and society as a whole.
The requirements
are listed below. In addition to these courses, throughout the year
you will be required to attend three group meetings where the art
department faculty will discuss the various emphases offered within
the department. By the end of the Foundation Year, you will be ready
to decide which art discipline to emphasize and be prepared for
the intellectual challenge that comprises a liberal arts education.
