Pacific Lutheran 31, Chapman 3 – The Chapman football team lost a very lopsided game to Pacific Lutheran (WA) last Saturday as legendary Lutes head coach Frosty Westering won his 300th game as a college head coach. It was all Lutes from the beginning. The Panthers were unable to move the ball against the Pacific Lutheran defense, managing just two first downs in their first five possessions and never getting deeper than the Lutes’ 40-yard line in the first half. The Lutes took the ball away four times (three fumbles, one interception) and turned three of the turnovers into touchdowns. Chapman’s only score came midway through the fourth quarter when junior kicker Brooks Farquhar (San Clemente/San Clemente High) booted a 29-yard field goal – his second of the year – to break up the PLU shutout. It was the first time since October 10, 1998 that the Panthers have been held without a touchdown in a game.
The Lutes offense did not overwhelm Chapman’s defense, which entered the game allowing just 18.5 points per game. Pacific Lutheran’s balanced attack gained an above-average 378 yards of total offense, 205 on the ground and 173 through the air. Freshman defensive back Nick Cabico (Costa Mesa/Costa Mesa High) made his first career interception in the fourth quarter, which would eventually lead to Chapman’s field goal.
Pacific Lutheran exploded for 17 points in the second quarter, including marching 55 yards in four plays for a touchdown to end the half with a 24-0 advantage. Chapman held the Lutes scoreless for the final 25:41 of play.
Chapman hosts Redlands this Saturday at Ernie Chapman Stadium at 7:00
pm. The Panthers have not beaten the Bulldogs in their last four meetings,
including last year’s 34-9 loss in Redlands. The Bulldogs enter the game
with a 1-2 record having lost in Thousand Oaks to Cal Lutheran last Saturday,
28-17. The game will be broadcast live via the internet by logging onto

Biola 3, Chapman 0 – Chapman lost its third consecutive match for the first time since the start of the 2001 season, getting shutout by visiting Biola, 3-0. It was the second straight 3-0 loss for the Panthers at home. The Eagles snapped a scoreless tie in the first minute of the second half on a goal from Dylan Martinez. Martinez also assisted on Biola's second goal of the game. Eagles' goalkeeper Daniel Thibault made six saves on ten shots to earn the shutout. The loss dropped the Panthers to two games below .500 also for the first time since 2001 and Chapman fell to 1-2 versus NAIA opponents.
The Master’s 1, Chapman 0 – Another early goal spelled doom for
the Panthers as they were shutout for the second consecutive game and lost
their fourth straight game to at The Master's, 1-0. Chapman has allowed
a goal in the first 12 minutes of play five times this season and is 1-4
in those games. Sophomore goalkeeper Efrain
Rodriguez (Santa Ana/Saddleback High) recovered from the early
goal to make six saves, while facing 16 shots, keeping Chapman close. The
Panthers’ record fell to 2-2 in games decided by one goal.

| 9/20 | @ Pacific Lutheran (WA) | W, 1-0 | 6-0 |
| 9/21 | @ Puget Sound (WA) | L, 1-2 | 6-1 |
Chapman 1, Pacific Lutheran 0 – The Chapman defense recorded its first shutout of the year and sophomore goalkeeper Mallory Dominguez (San Pedro/Mary Star High) made a career-high seven saves in goal to preserve an important in-region 1-0 win over host Pacific Lutheran. Junior forward Alyce Perry (Las Vegas, NV/Bonanza High) scored her second goal of the season in the 34th minute to get the Panthers on the board. Sophomores Simi Phull (Fullerton/Troy High) and Shari Lambert (Murrieta/Murrieta Valley High) each were credited with assists on Perry’s goal. The assist was Lambert’s fourth of the season and 13th of her career tying her for fourth on Chapman’s all-time assists list. Pacific Lutheran outshot Chapman 6-2 in the second half, but Dominguez made five of her seven saves in the second half to record her second career shutout.
Puget Sound 2, Chapman 1 – A second-half surge pulled the Panthers
back within a goal with 12 minutes to play, but Chapman couldn't complete
the upset of the nation's fourth-ranked Loggers, falling 2-1 to host Puget
Sound. Senior midfielder Nicole
Madonia (Fountain Valley/Fountain Valley High) scored her career-best
third goal of the season in the 78th minute and sophomore goalkeeper Mallory
Dominguez made six saves in goal, but it wasn't enough to overcome
the West Region's top-ranked team. The Panthers equaled the Loggers in
shots, 12 apiece, in suffering their first loss of the season. The 6-0
start had been Chapman's best in four years under head coach Craig Bennett.
Chapman remained third in the West Region rankings and dropped from 18th
to 19th in the Division III national poll this week.

| 9/19 | vs. Pomona-Pitzer* | W, 4-3 | 4-1 |
| vs. Cal Poly SLO (Club)* | L, 4-7 | 4-3 |
Chapman 4, Pomona-Pitzer 3 – An offensive burst of four goals by four different players in the second quarter was all Chapman needed to one-up Pomona-Pitzer for the second time in a week. The ninth-ranked Panthers proceeded to shutout the sixth-ranked (tied) Sagehens over the final quarter-plus to preserve the 4-3 win. Junior James Foley (La Habra/Sonora High) scored Chapman’s second goal and made four steals to lead the team. Sophomore Garrett Potter (Mission Viejo/Mission Viejo High) scored the Panthers’ fourth and decisive goal and assisted on two others. Senior goalie B.J. Ploessel (Cypress/Los Alamitos High) made 16 blocks in the cage to give Chapman a huge defensive boost. In six games this season, Ploessel has been impressive posting a 2:1 ratio of blocks to goals allowed, 70-36. The win propelled the Panthers from ninth to eighth in the Division III poll this week, their second advancement in as many weeks.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 7, Chapman 4 – Garrett
Potter scored a pair of goals and a team-high four steals and sophomore
Jameson
Burmeister (Yorba Linda/Esperanza High) scored a goal and assisted
on two others, but their tired Chapman team couldn’t hang with Cal Poly
in the end. SLO outscored the Panthers 3-0 in the second half and went
on to defeat the Panthers, 7-4, in Cal Baptist Tournament play. Chapman
goalie B.J.
Ploessel made another 10 blocks in goal. He has recorded 10 or
more blocks in four of Chapman’s six games this season.

Junior Kelly Crampton (Livermore/Granada High), Chapman’s women’s 5K record holder, eclipsed the 20-minute mark for the first time this season and ninth time in her career.
