Season Preview:

Cross-Country

The future of the Chapman University men’s and women’s cross-country teams looks hopeful. Head coach Anna Wlodarczyk has brought in a young crop of runners that she hopes will have an impact on the team’s success within the Division III ranks for years to come.

Kelly Crampton (Livermore/Granada High) and Erin Furlong (Geyserville/Ukiah High) return to anchor a women’s roster that consists of nine women, including five freshmen. Crampton is arguably one of Chapman’s best long distance runners in school history. In 2002, at the Stanford Invitational she set a new 5K record for Chapman by finishing with a time of 19:02. She finished first in the Redlands Invitational last year while running an 18:28.80 – a shorter course. Crampton, who doubles as a starter on Chapman’s “Sweet 16” women’s basketball team, also excelled in the classroom in 2002-03. She earned Academic All-District honors in both cross-country and basketball. Furlong’s stamina has complemented Crampton’s style for the past two seasons. She recorded her best time in 2002 at the Biola Invitational with a mark of 22:48.8. Freshmen Brittany Goettesch (La Mirada/Whittier Christian High) and Selina Brollini (San Diego/Patrick Henry High) enter the season in good shape and are expected to push Furlong for the number two spot.

On the men’s side, Wlodarczyk has had to cope with the graduation of her star runner over the past four seasons, Academic All-District selection Kerry Franich. Two freshmen, Jeff Harris (Portland, OR/Glencoe High) and Peter Silverman (Washington D.C./Georgetown Day High) will vie for the top spot weekly.

9/13 Cal Lutheran L, 13-23 1-1

Cal Lutheran 23, Chapman13 – Cal Lutheran played spoiler in Chapman’s home-opening football game last Saturday night, defeating the Panthers, 23-13. The Kingsmen put an exclamation point on an otherwise tightly contested game with their third touchdown of the night with eight seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Chapman was left wondering what could have been after having two field goal attempts blocked and missing another two field goal attempts throughout the game. The Chapman offense managed to move the ball well enough to total 346 yards and two touchdowns. But the Kingsmen also moved the ball, totaling 368 yards and 20 first downs.

The game went back and forth after a scoreless first quarter with Cal Lutheran striking first on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Casey Preston to Alex Gonzales. The Panthers responded on their next drive, moving the ball 76 yards on nine plays and capping the scoring drive with a one-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Patrick Josten (Irvine/University High). But a blocked extra-point attempt left the Panthers down by a point at halftime, 7-6. The Panthers defense picked off Preston three times in the first half, but none led to Chapman scores. Sophomores Chris Turner (Laguna Hills/Laguna Hills High) and Randell Hill (Lake Forest/El Toro High) and junior Jeremy Walker (Laguna Niguel/Dana Hills) each recorded their first interceptions of the season. Hill led the Panthers with three in 2002.

Cal Lutheran again opened up the scoring in the second half with a 24-yard field goal from Alex Espinosa. It was not a successful kicking night for either team as both teams combined to go 1-for-7 in field goal attempts. A 61-yard run by Josten set up Chapman’s second score, a 10-yard touchdown pass from Josten to senior receiver Lorenza Wilson (Moreno Valley/Valley View High). That touchdown gave the Panthers their only lead of the game, 13-10.

Josten and freshman running back Chase Twedell (Long Beach/Valley Christian High) both ran for over 100 yards each. It was the second straight 100-plus yard game for Twedell who finished with 118 yards. Senior linebacker Michael Carter (Moreno Valley/Valley View High) led the Chapman defense with 11 tackles, including seven solo tackles and a sack.

The Panthers fly to Tacoma, Washington to face Pacific Lutheran (WA) this Saturday. The Lutes and Panthers met for the first time in their schools’ histories in 2002 with Pacific Lutheran defeating Chapman, 35-10 at Ernie Chapman Stadium. PLU, which finished tied for second in the Northwest Conference in 2002 and posted a 5-4 record, is currently 0-1 after a 21-12 loss to Azusa Pacific last weekend. Lutes head coach Frosty Westering is seeking his 300th head coaching victory and has announced that this year, his 32nd at Pacific Lutheran, will be his final year. The game will be broadcast live via the internet by logging onto www.plu.edu/~lutecast. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm.

Redlands 2, Chapman 0 – The Bulldogs continued to own Chapman's number in men's soccer, winning their fifth straight match versus the Panthers, 2-0 in Redlands last Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers have not defeated Redlands in men's soccer since 1996. An early goal in the second minute of play proved to be the game-winner for Redlands. Chapman played Redlands as tough as any other time in the past five years, statistically near-even in shots (10-11), corners (3-4) and goalie saves (4-5). Sophomore keeper Efrain Rodriguez (Santa Ana/Saddleback High) made a season- high four saves in goal.

Chapman 3, Vanguard 2 – The Panthers and Lions squared off for the first time since 1997 and may have renewed a rivalry. In a heated battle that drew five yellow cards between the two squads, Chapman bested Vanguard, 3-2 on a Brock Schermerhorn (San Juan Capistrano/Aliso Niguel High) goal in the 64th minute of play. Sophomore goalkeeper Efrain Rodriguez made two second-half saves and five in the game as Chapman improved to 3-2. Freshman forward Chris Marshall (Sacramento/Jesuit High) put the Panthers on top early with a goal in the 5th minute, but the Lions bounced back with a pair of goals seven minutes apart to take a 2-1 lead. Marshall struck again on a rebound off a foul kick in the final seconds of the first half to tie the score.

Concordia 3, Chapman 0 – The Panthers dropped to 1-3 in their past four matches and fell to .500 with a 3-0 loss at the hands of Orange County-rival Concordia. For the fourth straight game, the Panthers gave up a goal in the first ten minutes of play and never recovered. The Eagles out-shot Chapman 17-9 and held the Panthers to just two second-half shots – neither were on frame. Kyle Carroll scored a pair of goals for Concordia, which improved to 5-0.

Claremont 2, Chapman 1 – Chapman lost a heartbreaker, 2-1, to 2002 SCIAC runner's up Claremont. The Panthers had fewer shots than the Stags, but more on goal, forcing goalkeeper Cameron Wheelan-Millie to make eight saves on 13 shots. After spotting Claremont a 2-0 lead in the first half, Chapman made it interesting with a late push in the second half. Freshman forward Danny Aviles (Menlo Park/Pinewood High) scored his third goal of the season in the 70th minute but the Panthers were turned away in the final 20 minutes of play.

Chapman 2, Hope International 1 – The undefeated Chapman women's soccer team saved its best soccer for the final 22 minutes of play and escaped with a win versus visiting Hope International, 2-1 in overtime. Sophomore forward Simi Phull (Fullerton/Sunny Hills High) bent a corner kick directly into the back of the net for the game-winner in the 92nd minute. After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, Chapman tied the score in the 70th minute on a penalty kick from junior defender Liz Hopkins (Fullerton/Troy High). The Panthers outshot the Royals, 21-4, and were turned away 11 times by Hope goalkeeper Regina Teplansky. The senior made nine of those saves in the second half.

Chapman 3, The Master’s 1 – Sophomore forwards Simi Phull and Shari Lambert (Murrieta/Murrieta Valley High) each scored a goal and an assist in the first half, aiding Chapman toward its fifth win of the season, 3-1 over The Master's College. Phull leads the Panthers with five goals and 11 points in the teams' first five games. For Lambert, who led the team in assists in 2002, it was her first goal of the year and team-leading third assist. Junior forward Nicole Hurst (St. Helens, OR/St. Helens High) scored her first goal of the season in the 38th minute of play. The team's 5-0 start is the best since Chapman went 7-0-1 to begin the 1997 season, and the best under fourth-year head coach Craig Bennett. The Panthers high-powered offense is currently averaging three goals per game. The Chapman women moved up one spot in the Division III national rankings and are currently 18th in the country.

*Puget Sound (WA) Tournament

Puget Sound Tournament – Chapman drew a tough schedule in their first trip north to the Puget Sound (WA) Tournament in Tacoma, Washington. The Panthers first had to face preseason top-25 opponent Whitworth (WA), a team which they lost their season-opening match to in five games. Plus on the second day Chapman had to play 24th-ranked Pacific Lutheran (WA) and 16th-ranked Puget Sound (WA), on their opponents’ home floors. Sophomore middle-blocker Stephanie Sczech (Huntington Beach/Huntington Beach High) led the Panthers with 42 kills over the four matches. Junior middle-blocker Sara Naumann (Oxnard/Oxnard High) pitched in 38 kills of her own. Chapman’s defense played particularly well in a tough, 3-1 loss to Puget Sound. The Panthers had all six of its starters in double-digits in digs, including a team-high 21 by junior outside hitter Lacy Ertel (Newbury Park/La Reina High), and tallied more digs than the Loggers, 108-104.

La Verne 30, 30, 30, Chapman 15, 22, 23 – Ten matches into the season, Chapman’s women's volleyball team has been worn out. The Panthers have faced NCAA Division III top-25 teams six times already this season: Whitworth (WA) twice (although the second time they had dropped out of the top-25), Pacific Lutheran (WA) twice, Cal State Hayward and Puget Sound (WA). They returned home from the Puget Sound Tournament only to suffer a straight-games loss at the Hutton Center to the nation's sixth-ranked La Verne Leopards. The Panthers played well defensively, led by Jenny Busch's (San Juan Capistrano/St. Margaret's High) 18 digs. But could not contain the offensive firepower La Verne threw at them - 49 team kills, led by Amy Kratochvil and Tricia Scharry with 13 kills apiece. The Leopards, who won the Division III national championship in 2001, posted a team hitting percentage of .280 in the three games. Senior outside hitter Darby Stern (Topanga Canyon/Viewpoint High) led Chapman with eight kills and added a solo block. Chapman's schedule lightens up a little as it is scheduled to face just one top-25 team, La Verne, in its next 11 matches.

Chapman 24, 30, 30, 30, Whittier 30, 28, 25, 28 – After dropping five matches in a row, Chapman bounced back with a win against the Whittier Poets on Wednesday. The Panthers lost the first game to the Poets 30-24, but rebounded by winning the next three to take the match, 3-1. Four Panthers reached double-digits in kills. Stephanie Sczech and Darby Stern led the Panthers offensively with 14 kills apiece. Sara Naumann followed with 12 kills along with Jade Salata (Rancho Santa Margarita/Santa Margarita High) who had 11. All four games were closely played with Chapman defeating the Poets in the second and fourth games by just two points. Chapman was down in the fourth game 24-27 before rallying to score six of the final seven points to avoid a fifth game. Leading the way defensively was Naumann who had 29 digs. The Panthers, improved their home record to 2-1.

Chapman 10, Pomona-Pitzer 9 – The tenth-ranked Panthers upended the sixth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens with a one-goal defeat and finished the tournament 3-1.
