Fall Season Preview
Men’s Water Polo
The Chapman men’s water polo team enters the 2003 season at the Inland Classic this weekend ranked tenth in Division III. Despite posting an 8-13 record in 2002, the Panthers suffered a handful of hard-to-swallow defeats that could have easily made them 13-8. Chapman lost five games by a goal, including an overtime loss to La Verne in the Inland Classic a year ago. Following an 0-5 start, the Panthers finished last season on a positive note going 8-8 over their final 16 games, including a stretch of five wins in six games in the Cal Baptist and Caltech tournaments.
Chapman returns senior goalie B.J. Ploessel (Cypress/Los Alamitos High), who for the third consecutive year in 2002 made more blocks than goals allowed, recording a career-high 253 blocks in 21 games (12.1 per game). Also defensively, the Panthers return sophomore Jameson Burmeister (Yorba Linda/Esperanza High) and sophomore Garrett Potter (Mission Viejo/Mission Viejo High) who collected 33 and 29 steals, respectively.
Offensively, the Panthers lost 110 goals scored to graduation. However,
Burmeister led all returning players and finished second on the team with
33 goals in 2002. Junior driver James
Foley (La Habra/Sonora High), who earned All-Orange Empire Conference
honors at Fullerton College, may be looked upon to add some offensive firepower
to an unproven front line.

Chapman 17, Claremont 14 – The Chapman defense made a strong statement on Saturday. The Panthers, scrutinized for their inability to stop teams in recent years, backed up head coach Ken Visser’s preseason belief that defense will be a strength of his team in 2003 and had a heavy influence on the outcome of Chapman’s 17-14 road victory over Claremont-Mudd Scripps Colleges.
Chapman held the Stags to just one first down in the first quarter, blocked a field goal attempt, held their opponents to just 2-of-15 on third and fourth down conversions, allowed under 300 yards of total offense (271) for the first time since the 2002 season opener, versus Whittier – a team that finished the season 1-8 – AND made two interceptions that led to two scores. The first interception, made by junior linebacker Nick Heinle (Westminster/Fountain Valley High) led to Chapman’s first touchdown of the season in the first quarter. On the ensuing drive, the Panthers marched 55 yards on 11 plays, ate up nearly six minutes of clock time and freshman running back Chase Twedell (Long Beach/Valley Christian High) capped it with a three-yard touchdown run, the first of his career.
The second interception came with the game knotted at 14 and with 40 seconds remaining in the game. Claremont was driving toward a potential game-winning score when sophomore defensive back Scott Filbin (Santa Ana/Foothill High) picked off Stags quarterback Mitch Browne and ran it back 20 yards. Five plays later, the Panthers were within field goal range with six seconds to go and junior kicker Brooks Farquhar (San Clemente/San Clemente High) sealed the win with a 32-yard field goal, his first of the season.
Claremont, which finished the season 7-2 and tied for second in the SCIAC in 2002, did hold the Panthers offense in check for the most part but struggled to find a solution for Twedell, who besides rushing for his first touchdown, also became the first freshman in Chapman history to rush for 100 yards in his Panthers debut. The 6-1, 185-pound former CIF player of the year finished with 20 carries for 101 yards. Junior fullback Myron Mailo (Carson/Carson High) scored the Panthers second touchdown in the second quarter, a five-yard pass from junior quarterback Patrick Josten (Irvine/University High).
If there was one glaring weakness in Chapman’s stats from Saturday’s opener it was defending kick returns. Claremont returned three kicks for 110 yards, including a 60-yard return on the game’s final play, forcing all on the Chapman sideline and in the stands to hold their breath until the final tackle was made.
Chapman faces Cal Lutheran this weekend in its home opener. The Kingsmen
lost on the road to Menlo last Saturday, 43-7. However, the Kingsmen have
held an edge over the Panthers in recent head-to-head meetings, winning
the past four games, including last year’s 40-28 win in Thousand Oaks.
Last time the two teams met in Orange, the Kingsmen prevailed by a score
of 33-25. The Panthers have won back-to-back season openers for the first
time since 1994-96. The Panthers will also try to become the first Chapman
team since 1996 to begin the season 2-0. The Panthers are 0-3 in their
past three home-openers. Chapman's national championship baseball team
will be honored at halftime.

Pomona-Pitzer 4, Chapman 1 – The Panthers suffered their first
loss of the season to SCIAC-rival Pomona-Pitzer, 3-1. Adam Dewey snapped
a 1-1 tied midway through the first half and the Sagehens never looked
back, improving to 2-0. Chapman lost despite out-shooting Pomona, 12-8,
including five shots on frame in the second half. Sagehens goalkeeper Dan
Bendett made all five saves and six in the game. Junior forward Brock
Schermerhorn (San Juan Capistrano/Aliso Viejo High) scored the
Panthers' lone goal on a penalty kick in the 12th minute of play. He leads
the team with three goals this season.

Chapman 4, La Verne 1 – Chapman scored four goals for the second
straight game and defeated host La Verne, 4-1, to improve to 3-0 on the
season. Sophomore forward Simi
Phull (Fullerton/Sunny Hills High) scored a goal – the game-winner
– for the third consecutive game and currently leads the team with three
goals this season. Senior midfielder Nicole
Madonia (Fountain Valley/Fountain Valley High) scored her second
goal of the season in the first half to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead at
halftime. Chapman scored a pair of goals less than three minutes apart
to put the game out of reach in the final ten minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper
Mallory
Dominguez (San Pedro/Mary Star High) made two saves in goal.

Whittier Tournament – The Panthers felt well about their play on the first day of the tournament, forcing the nation’s 17th-ranked Whitworth to five games before losing their opening match. Chapman then came back to defeat Lewis & Clark in three straight games. However, the second day of the tournament was not as kind to Mary Cahill’s squad as they managed to win just one game in two defeats to Pacific Lutheran and the #5 team in the country, Cal State Hayward. Senior outside hitter Darby Stern (Topanga/Viewpoint High) and sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Sczech (Huntington Beach/Huntington Beach High) each recorded 33 kills over the four matches to lead the Panthers. And senior outside hitter Jenny Busch (San Juan Capistrano/St. Margaret’s High) led the way defensively with 46 digs (3.26 per game). Junior setter Renee Garand (Fullerton/Sunny Hills High) earned All-Tournament honors with 123 assists in the four matches. She averaged 8.2 assists per game in the tournament.
Chapman 30, 30, 24, 30, Claremont 22, 26, 30, 27 – For the eighth
consecutive season, Chapman won its home-opener, defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Colleges three games to one. It was the second straight year the Panthers
hosted Claremont to open the season, defeating the Athenas in five games
a year ago. The Panthers improved to 2-3 with the win, while Claremont
is still searching for its first victory at 0-5. Darby Stern and Stephanie
Sczech led the Panthers with 12 kills apiece. Junior middle blocker Sara
Naumann (Oxnard/Oxnard High) also reached double-digits in kills
with 11. The Chapman defense, touted by head coach Mary Cahill as the team’s
biggest strength entering the season, was strong as four Panthers reached
double-digits in digs. Chapman also recorded a season-high nine service
aces, led by Stern who had three.

For the second consecutive year, junior Kelly Crampton (Livermore/Granada High) took first place at the Redlands Invitational cross-country meet. This year the meet was moved to Sylvan Park, a longer course than previous Redlands meets, but that didn’t deter Crampton from finishing nearly five seconds ahead of the next closest runner. In three Redlands invites, Crampton has finished no worse than fifth, including two gold medals. Crampton is the school’s record holder in the 5K, with a time of 19:02 at the Stanford Invitational in 2002.
