| 10/4 | @ Willamette (OR) | L, 0-54 | 1-4 |
Willamette 54, Chapman 0 – The host Bearcats continued their dominance over Chapman with a convincing 54-0 win over the struggling Panthers last Saturday. The emphatic victory was Willamette’s sixth straight over Chapman since 1997. The biggest news coming out of the Chapman camp entering Saturday’s matchup was the loss of junior quarterback Patrick Josten (Irvine/University High), who would miss his first game in two and a half years due to a concussion he suffered versus Redlands the week before.
In the end, the Panthers managed just 97 yards of total offense and eight first downs in the game. The deepest the Chapman offense got into Willamette territory was the 32-yard line and it was forced to punt every time. Senior punter Jesse Harmon (Mission Viejo/Mission Viejo High), who currently ranks 21st in Division III with a 39.7 yards per punt average, punted seven times in the game. Of those punts, four landed inside the 20, doubling his season total.
The Bearcats, who improved to 3-2 with the win, rushed for 358 yards against the Chapman defense, by far the most yards the Panthers have given up on the ground this season. Willamette scored five rushing touchdowns and only turned over the ball once when junior defensive lineman Matt Greco (Orange/Villa Park High) forced and recovered a fumble on the Willamette 34-yard line in the second quarter. Senior linebacker Michael Carter (Moreno Valley/Valley View High) led the Chapman defense with 12 tackles, including eight solo tackles and two tackles for a loss.
Lewis & Clark (OR) makes its first-ever trip to Orange this weekend
looking to avenge last season’s 41-40 loss to Chapman. The Pioneers are
3-1 this season, suffering their only loss at home versus Occidental, 43-30
in their second game of the season. Lewis & Clark is averaging 455
yards per game of total offense, but have allowed over 464 yards per game
on defense. With last year’s one-point victory, the Panthers hold a series
edge, 1-0 over the Pioneers. Chapman will honor its two Hall of Fame inductees,
Art Bias and Sandra Olivas-Stradling, at a ceremony during halftime. Kickoff
is scheduled for 7:00 pm. The game will be broadcast via the internet by
Lewis & Clark radio at: http://www.sportsjuice.com/providers2/index.php?tname=lclark

| 10/6 | Caltech | W, 8-0 | 5-6 |
Chapman 8, Caltech 0 – Chapman scored six first-half goals en
route to their second straight win, an 8-0 decision over visiting Caltech.
It marked the first time the Panthers have earned back-to-back victories
since beginning the season 2-0. Senior midfielder Scott
Ross (Marietta, GA/Canyon High) scored Chapman's first two goals
in the first 20 minutes of the game, his first two goals of the season.
Junior forward Tony
Ferrari (Yorba Linda/Esperanza High) scored a goal and assisted
on three others in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Chris
Marshall (Sacramento/Jesuit High) made the first start of his career
and walked away with his first career shutout. It was the second time this
season the Panthers have scored at least eight goals in a game.

| 10/3 | Whittier | W, 2-0 | 8-2 |
Chapman 2, Whittier 0 – Senior midfielder Nicole
Madonia (Fountain Valley/Fountain Valley High) had a big night
offensively for Chapman, scoring a pair of goals as the Panthers won an
important in-region game versus the then-SCIAC-leading Whittier, 2-0. Sophomore
forward Shari
Lambert (Murrieta/Murrieta Valley High) assisted on Madonia's first
goal, the game-winner in the 23rd minute of play. It was Lambert's team-leading
sixth assist of the year and 15th of her career, moving her into sole-possesion
of third place on Chapman's all-time assist leaders list. Sophomore goalkeeper
Mallory
Dominguez (San Pedro/Mary Star High) was solid in net, making two
saves on five Whittier shots for her second shutout of the season, and
lowering her goals-against average to 0.85 this season. The Panthers’ 8-2
start is their best record through ten games since 1997 when Chapman posted
an 8-1-1 record. The ’97 squad went 4-3-1 over its final seven games and
failed to reach the NCAA tournament. Chapman remained ranked both third
in the West Region and 18th in Division III by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America in this week’s polls.

| 10/6 | @ La Verne | L, 0-3 | 4-10 |
| 10/8 | @ Cal Lutheran | W, 3-2 | 5-10 |
La Verne 30, 30, 30, Chapman 21, 26, 16 – The Panthers dropped their tenth match of the season to nation’s fourth-ranked Leopards in three straight games. Senior outside hitter Darby Stern (Topanga Canyon/Viewpoint High) matched a season-high with 14 kills, but the Panthers defense was held to a season-low 31 digs. With the loss, Chapman fell to 0-7 versus teams ranked in the nation’s top-25 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The Panthers have a winning record versus teams that are not nationally ranked, making their 4-10 record a bit deceiving.
Chapman 25, 30, 30, 23, 15, Cal Lutheran 30, 23, 24, 30, 13 –
Chapman proved just how deceiving its record was with a hard fought five-game
victory over host Cal Lutheran on Wednesday night; a win that just might
rejuvenate the Panthers’ season. Head coach Mary Cahill had never won in
Thousand Oaks, despite being Chapman’s all-time winningest volleyball coach.
Her Panther teams had been 0-6 at Cal Lutheran since 1994. However, that
losing streak, as well as Chapman’s own four-match losing streak to the
Regals, came to an end with this thrilling win. Defense has been the Panthers’
strength all season, but this night the Panthers did it not only all six
starters reaching double-digits in digs and totaling 110 as a team, but
also with blocking. Sophomore middle blocker Stephanie
Sczech (Huntington Beach/Huntington Beach High) and seniors Jenny
Busch (San Juan Capistrano/St. Margaret’s High) and Darby Stern
each recorded solo blocks and junior middle blocker Sara
Naumann (Oxnard/Oxnard High) assisted on four blocks. Offensively,
Stern equaled her career-high with 22 kills, versus just five attack errors
to lead the Panthers. Busch pitched in 15 kills of her own in the win.
The Chapman defense continues to be one of the toughest in the nation,
ranking 19th in Division III in digs per game as a team. Through the team’s
first 13 matches, the Panthers were averaging 22.47 digs per game.

Occidental 9, Chapman 4 – The Tigers scored six unanswered goals and ran the lead to 8-1 before Chapman staged a minor rally in the third and fourth quarters. Chapman scored three of the game’s final four goals, but it wasn’t enough in Caltech Classic play. Junior James Foley (La Habra/Sonora High) scored a pair of goals and made four steals to lead the Panthers. Sophomore Jameson Burmeister (Yorba Linda/Esperanza High) recorded a pair of assists.
Chapman 15, Cal Maritime 3 – Jameson Burmeister scored a team-high five goals and recorded five assists to lead Chapman toward its biggest offensive explosion of the season, a 15-3 win over Cal Maritime. Six different Panthers scored goals, including James Foley who found the back of the cage three times and assisted on two teammate goals. Senior goalie B.J. Ploessel (Cypress/Los Alamitos High) made five blocks in goal. Chapman scored the first six goals of the game.
Chapman 17, Cal Lutheran 6 – The Panthers’ largest scoring effort of the season (15 versus Cal Maritime) didn’t last long as they posted 17 goals versus first-year program Cal Lutheran in their final game of the Caltech Classic. Four different Panthers scored three goals apiece: sophomore Garrett Potter (Mission Viejo/Mission Viejo High) and Chasen Marshall (Newport Beach/Costa Mesa), junior Scott Chisholm (Villa Park/Villa Park High). B.J. Ploessel came out of the cage for the second time this season to score his first goals of the year. Ploessel also made six blocks in goal. Despite going 2-1 in the weekend tournament, the Panthers fell to 10th in the Collegiate Water Polo Association’s Division III poll this week.
BYU-Hawaii 13, Chapman 9 – Facing the nation’s 16th-ranked team,
including Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, the Panthers came up a bit short
in a neutral site game versus the Seasiders on Monday evening. The Panthers
got outstanding offensive efforts from James Foley, who scored a season-high
six goals, and Jason
Marganian (San Diego/Valencia High), who added three goals, but
the Panthers never pulled within closer than two goals after halftime before
losing by four. B.J. Ploessel made 14 blocks in goal despite the loss.
The Chapman power play scored three goals, but missed seven other shots
with the man advantage.
