| 10/18 | Menlo | L, 14-63 | 2-5 |
Menlo 63, Chapman 14 – Menlo entered Saturday’s football game versus the host Panthers averaging over 447 yards of total offense per game and ranked 10th in the nation in that category. With a little help from their defense, the Oaks improved on that ranking as they recorded 619 yards of offense to defeat the Panthers, 63-14.
After a Chapman defensive stop on the Oaks’ game-opening drive, Menlo ended the first quarter with two quick scores on two of the Panthers’ six turnovers on the night. Menlo opened the game up in the second quarter, scoring twice in the first minute of the period, then again three more times before halftime, leading 49-14 at the break.
The turnovers – two interceptions, four fumbles – stalled an otherwise productive Chapman offense that posted 338 yards of offense of its own, the fourth time the Panthers have surpassed 300 yards this season. Junior quarterback Patrick Josten (Irvine/University High) threw for 214 yards and two big-yardage touchdown passes to senior wideout Lorenza Wilson (Moreno Valley/Valley View High) for 43 and 66 yards in the second quarter. Wilson finished with 109 yards receiving, reaching the 100-yard mark for the second time this season.
Two Menlo quarterbacks, Frank Borba and Ferni Garza, combined to run an extremely efficient passing game that completed 28-of-36 pass attempts for 390 yards and four touchdowns, versus no interceptions. The Oaks used 12 different receivers, with none totaling more than the 81 yards by Joey Risi.
Chapman’s junior linebacker Josh Oskins (Santa Ana/Foothill High) led all defenders with 11 tackles, including four solo tackles, two tackles for loss, and one quarterback sack. Oskins leads the Chapman defense this year with 62 tackles, including 45 solo tackles.
The Panthers will celebrate homecoming this weekend and hope to take
advantage of a winless Whittier squad. Chapman has won six of its seven
meetings against the Poets, including the last four in a row. Whittier
is coming off of its biggest loss of the season, a 35-point defeat at the
hands of Claremont. Chapman defeated that same Stags team in the first
week of the season, 17-14. The Panthers hope to improve on its scoring
offense that is average just over 13 points a game. The Poets are averaging
18.2 points per game.

| 10/18 | @ Occidental | L, 0-1 | 11-3 |
| 10/22 | @ Claremont | W, 2-0 | 12-3 |
Occidental 1, Chapman 0 – The Panthers were out-shot by the host Tigers, 15-12, including a 10-7 advantage in the second half, but the shot that mattered most came in the 89th minute of play. Occidental’s Martine Donovan scored the game’s only goal as time was expiring in the game and the Panthers dropped just their third game of the season and the Tigers earned their fourth win of the year. Sophomore goalkeeper Mallory Dominguez (San Pedro/Mary Star High) made five saves in goal despite the loss. It was just the second time this season Chapman has been shutout.
Chapman 2, Claremont 0 – Two goals, eight minutes apart provided
all the Panthers needed to upend SCIAC contender Claremont on its home
field. Junior forward Nicole
Hurst (St. Helens, OR/St. Helens High) scored the game-winner in
the 73rd minute off a pass from sophomore forward Simi
Phull (Fullerton/Sunny Hills High) The goal was the fourth – and
second game-winner – of the season for Hurst. Junior midfielder Alyce
Perry (Las Vegas, NV/Bonanza High) added her fifth goal of the
season in the 81st minute of play. Goalkeeper Mallory Dominguez and the
Chapman defense made those goals standup, making seven saves and earning
her fifth shutout of the year.

| 10/21 | @ Alliant International | L, 1-3 | 9-11 |
| 10/23 | La Sierra | W, 3-0 | 10-11 |
Chapman 30, 30, 23, 30, Whittier 28, 24, 30, 22 – Chapman won its season-best fifth consecutive match, defeating the host Poets in four games. Five different Panthers earned double-digit kill totals, led by senior outside hitter Jenny Busch (San Juan Capistrano/St. Margaret’s High), who equaled her season-high with 20. Busch also was one of four Panthers with 20 or more digs in the match. Her 25 in the match gave her 901 for her career. Also reaching a milestone was senior outside hitter Darby Stern (Topanga Caynon/Viewpoint High) who entered the match with 899 career kills and posted another 14 to become just the third player in the school’s 10-year Division III history to surpass 900 career kills. Junior setter Renee Garand (Fullerton/Sunny Hills High) had another solid passing effort, recording 54 assists in the four games. In this week’s NCAA statistical polls, the Panthers moved up to 11th in the country with an average of 23.67 digs per game as a team.
Alliant International 26, 30, 30, 30, Chapman 30, 26, 23, 28 – With a chance to even its record at 10-10 for the first time since the Panthers began the season 1-1, Chapman suffered a let down and had their five-match losing streak snapped by the host Mountain Lions on Tuesday night. After winning the first game, 30-26, Chapman dropped its next three and fell to 9-11 overall. The Panthers also dropped to 5-10 away from Hutton Center, where they will play their final five matches of the season beginning Thursday night. Jenny Busch led the Panthers with 16 kills and 14 digs.
Chapman 30, 30, 30, La Sierra 13, 22, 14 – The Panthers beat
La Sierra on Thursday night to earn their eighth win in their past 11 matches

attack included contributions from the entire bench, as twelve different
Panthers recorded kills. Leading the offensive attack was Darby Stern who
had 11 kills on the night. Following closely was junior middle blocker
Sara
Naumann (Oxnard/Oxnard High) who recorded nine kills. On the defensive
side of the ball Lacy
Ertel (Newbury Park/La Reina High) led the Panthers with 10 digs.
The Panthers emptied their bench in the third game and freshmen Jessica
O’Leary (Mission Viejo/Capistrano Valley High) and Whitney
Tharaldson (West Covina/South Hills High) recorded the first kills
of their career.

| 10/18 | @ Cal Baptist* | L, 2-8 | 7-10 |
| vs. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo* | W, 7-4 | 8-10 |
Cal Baptist 8, Chapman 2 – Facing the country’s 19th-ranked Lancers (Divisions I, II and III included) the Panthers gave up an early lead and never recovered in Cal Baptist Tournament action. Despite a solid effort in goal from senior goalie B.J. Ploessel (Cypress/Los Alamitos High), Chapman could only capitalize on two of its 19 shot attempts. Juniors James Foley (La Habra/Sonora High) and Scott Chisholm (Villa Park/Villa Park High) scored the Panthers’ only goals, both unassisted.
Chapman 7, Cal Poly SLO 4 – The Panthers brought out their firepower versus the nation’s top-ranked club team from Cal Poly, as five different players scored goals for Chapman in a 7-4 win. James Foley and sophomore Jameson Burmeister (Yorba Linda/Esperanza High) each scored a pair of goals to lead the way. Burmeister also recorded three steals. B.J. Ploessel turned away 10 of Cal Poly’s 14 shots on goal with 10 blocks. It was the 12th time in 18 games Ploessel has recorded double-digits in blocks. The win avenged a September loss to the same team, 7-3, also at Cal Baptist.
