Chapman Hall of Fame To Induct Two Next Saturday
ORANGE - In a ceremony and banquet to be held on campus on October 11, Chapman University will induct its two newest members into the Chapman Athletics Hall of Fame. This will be the 24th annual induction ceremony. There are currently 75 members enshrined in the institution’s Hall.
A standout track and field star and basketball player for the Panthers, Art Bias graduated from Chapman College in 1958. Bias led Chapman’s basketball team to great heights in the late ‘50’s as the team posted a record of 45-23 during his playing days under legendary basketball coach Don Perkins. He set a school record of 38 points in a game versus Whittier during the 1956-57 season. Since, only six Panthers have eclipsed that mark in a game. Bias was also a fantastic track and field athlete, setting a school record in the triple jump, as well as placing as high as second in the country at the NAIA finals in 1957. Interestingly, Bias’s son, Tim, earned All-Tournament honors at the Redlands Tournament 40 years after Art earned the same honor during his playing days.
After his days at Chapman, Bias joined the Army and continued to compete on basketball and track and field teams. Student athletics has remained a part of his life throughout his professional career as he has gone on to coach basketball and track at three different high schools, along with a seven-year run as head basketball coach at the University of La Verne in the 1970’s. He currently serves as the director of athletics at Inglewood High School in Inglewood, California.
For the second consecutive year, Chapman will induct a softball player into its Hall of Fame. Sandra Olivas played third base for the Panthers from 1989-92 and earned All-America honors twice while leading the nation in home runs in both her sophomore and junior years. Chapman, then competing at the Division II level, was 150-65 during her four years and won a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title in 1991. In that same year, Olivas was named the most valuable player of the CCAA. She was named Chapman’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 1992.
Now Sandra Stradling since marrying, she teaches second grade in Chino, California and is a mother of two sons, Scott (10) and Jacob (4).
The ceremony and banquet will be held on Saturday, October 11 at 5:00
pm. The guests of honor will then be recognized in a special ceremony during
halftime of the Panthers’ football game versus Lewis & Clark (OR) that
evening. For more information, contact the Chapman University athletics
department at (714) 997-6691.

| 9/27 | Redlands | L, 16-17 | 1-3 |
Redlands 17, Chapman 16 – The University of Redlands Bulldogs rallied from a 16-0 deficit and scored 17 unanswered points in the second half to edge the Chapman University Panthers, 17-16, in front of 2,376 at Ernie Chapman Stadium last Saturday night.
The game was all Chapman for the first two and a half quarters of play. The Panther defense made four interceptions to thwart two likely Bulldogs’ scoring drives. And the Chapman offense, led by Patrick Josten’s (Irvine/University High) 225 passing yards and two touchdowns, made a handful of big plays to put Chapman on top early in the third quarter. Josten connected on 18-of-32 of his pass attempts, including an 80-yard touchdown bomb to Lorenza Wilson (Moreno Valley/Valley View High), to put Chapman up 16-0. Wilson finished with four catches for 121 yards. Randell Hill (Lake Forest/El Toro High) snatched two of the four Panther interceptions and currently leads the team with three picks on the year.
With 6:30 to play in the third quarter, Redlands took advantage of a momentum-changing play that began with Chapman defensive lineman Dave Roth (Santa Margarita/Capo Valley Christian High) intercepting Redlands’ quarterback Brian Sapp. Roth motored 23 yards before Redlands stripped the ball and recovered the fumble at Chapman’s 35-yard line. Four plays later the Bulldogs scored their first touchdown of the night. Redlands struck again early in the fourth quarter, with a second touchdown. Kyle Beach’s 42-yard field goal with 9:16 remaining in the game gave Redlands a 17-16 advantage, which proved to be the difference.
The Panthers and Bulldogs exchanged strong defensive stands throughout the remainder of the game. With Chapman moving toward field goal range in the final minute, Josten was sacked for a 10-yard loss on the game’s final play to preserve the Bulldogs victory.
For the second time in as many weeks, the Panthers travel to the northwest,
this time to face the Willamette University Bearcats. The Bearcats are
2-2 this season, having defeated Redlands, 35-17 in Redlands, their only
common opponent with Chapman thus far. Willamette is coming off a difficult
road loss, 41-19 at Menlo last weekend. This will be the sixth meeting
between the two teams since 1997, while Willamette has never lost to the
Panthers, posting a 5-0 series record. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 pm.

| 9/29 | Hope International | W, 2-1 | 4-6 |
Chapman 2, Hope International 1 – Chapman snapped its four-game
losing streak with an impressive 2-1 win over visiting Hope International.
The Panthers, who have been bitten by early goals in five of their first
nine games this season, struck early with a goal of their own tonight as
junior forward Brock
Schermerhorn (San Juan Capistrano/ Aliso Niguel High) scored his
team-best fifth goal of the season in the seventh minute of play. Junior
defender Jay
Faulk (Long Beach/Millikan High) added his first career-goal in
the 83rd minute and it proved to be the game-winner when the Royals rallied
for their first goal of the game four minutes later, breaking up Chapman's
shutout bid. Hope International was forced to play a man short for the
final 30 minutes of the game when goalkeeper Mark Abate earned a red card
for taking out a Chapman forward on a breakaway. The Panthers out-shot
the Royals, 22-7, including 13-1 in the first half.

| 10/1 | @ Redlands | W, 2-1 (OT) | 7-2 |
Point Loma 1, Chapman 0 – After a 6-0 start to the season, Chapman's women's soccer team lost its second consecutive game to visiting Point Loma Nazarene, 1-0. It was the first time the Panthers have been shutout this season - entering the game with a 2.4 goals per game offense. The loss was also a rarity on Chapman's home soil and is just the third time in its past 33 games the team has suffered a home defeat. Maddie Tantillo scored the game's only goal in the 15th minute, blistering a shot from 20 yards out into the upper left corner of the goal. It was the Sea Lions' fifth consecutive win via shutout and they have not allowed a goal in 475 consecutive minutes of play.
Chapman 2, Redlands 1 – Junior midfielder Alyce
Perry (Las Vegas, NV/Bonanza High) scored the game-winning goal
two minutes into the first sudden-victory overtime period, giving the Panthers
a 2-1 win over West Region rival Redlands. Chapman, which currently ranks
third in the West and 18th in Division III, took an early lead on a Shari
Lambert (Murrieta/Murrieta Valley High) goal in the 11th minute
of play. Lambert also assisted on Perry’s game-winner and currently leads
the team with five assists. Perry had assisted on Lambert’s goal, as well.
The Bulldogs forced overtime with their first and only goal in the 68th
minute. They out-shot the Panthers 11-5 in the game, but sophomore goalkeeper
Mallory
Dominguez (San Pedro/Mary Star High) made five saves in the win.
Chapman improved to 3-1 in in-region play.
