10/11 Lewis & Clark (OR) W, 30-21 2-4

Chapman 30, Lewis & Clark 21 – The Panthers beat the visiting Lewis and Clark, 30-21, before a crowd of 2,017 at Ernie Chapman Stadium on Saturday night. The Panthers snapped a four-game losing streak by playing well on both sides of the ball.

The game marked the return of junior quarterback Patrick Josten (Irvine/University High) who had been out for a week with a concussion. Both teams looked a little tentative on offense in a scoreless first quarter. Chapman struck first, scoring at 8:54 in the second quarter when Josten hit a diving A.J. Herrera (Alta Loma/Damien High) with a 35-yard touchdown pass. Freshman running back Chase Twedell (Cerritos/Valley Christian High) scored less than four minutes later on a 25-yard touchdown run which put Chapman on top 14-6. Josten added a 17-yard touchdown pass to Ben Alvarado (Yorba Linda/Esperanza High) to give the Panthers a 21-6 halftime lead. Josten was 10-for-16 for 178 yards passing, looking almost unaffected by his week-long absence.

Lewis and Clark opened the scoring in the second half. Pioneers quarterback Trent Thompson found Reuben Miller with an 11-yard scoring pass at the end of the third quarter to cap a 12-play, 85-yard drive. After a 39-yard Chapman field goal from junior kicker, Brooks Farquhar (San Clemente/San Clemente High), the Pioneers cut the Panthers’ lead to three on a Ryan Bogle touchdown-run from 19 yards out. Chapman put an exclamation point on its first home win of the season, with a four-yard TD-run from two-way player, senior Michael Carter (Moreno Valley/Valley View High). Carter led the Panthers with 62-yards rushing on 18 carries. Chapman’s final scoring drive of 38 yards followed Herrera’s 39-yard kickoff return, his second big return of the night.

Junior linebacker Josh Oskins (Santa Ana/Foothill High) led the Panthers with nine tackles, including eight solo tackles on defense.

Chapman hosts 4-1 Menlo College this week and is will enter the game with a three-game losing streak versus the Oaks. Look out for a slugfest as these two teams have combined for an average of 79.3 points over the past four meetings. Menlo doubled-up on the Panthers in Atherton last year, 44-22.

10/10 @ Cal State Hayward W, 3-2 (OT) 6-6
10/12 @ U.C. Santa Cruz L, 1-5 6-7

Chapman 3, Cal State Hayward 2 (OT) – The Panthers snatched victory from the hands of defeat on the road at Cal State Hayward, scoring the game-tying goal in the 88th minute of play to force overtime, then scoring the game-winning goal nine minutes into the extra period. The Pioneers scored what appeared would be the game-winning goal in the 79th minute, taking a 2-1 lead. But senior forward Scott Ross (Marietta, GA/Canyon High) scored his third goal in two games nine minutes later to tie the score. Junior forward Brock Schermerhorn (San Juan Capistrano/Aliso Niguel High) scored his team-high seventh goal of the season – and third game-winner of the year – in the 99th minute to give the Panthers the overtime win. The goal also moved Schermerhorn into sole possession of 8th place on Chapman's all-time scoring list. The win was the Panthers fourth in a row and evened their record at .500 for the first time since the team was 3-3 in mid-September.

U.C. Santa Cruz 5, Chapman 1 – The Banana Slugs, ranked 14th in Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, won their 14th consecutive game of the season, defeating the visiting Panthers, 5-1. Chapman broke up a 2-0 shutout with a goal from freshman forward Danny Aviles (Menlo Park/Pinewood High) in the 61st minute, to inject some life into a possible Panther rally. However, Santa Cruz scored nine minutes later and twice more in the final 13 minutes to squash the Chapman hopes of an upset. Facing a barrage of 18 shots by the Slugs, sophomore goalkeeper Efrain Rodriguez (Santa Ana/Saddleback High) posted a career-high ten saves in net.

Madonia has already surpassed career-highs with goals (6) and points (13).

Chapman 2, U.C. Santa Cruz 1 – Junior forward Nicole Hurst (St. Helen’s, OR/St. Helen’s High) gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead with her third goal of the season just six minutes into the second half. It proved to be the game-winner as Santa Cruz broke up the shutout with a goal in the 64th minute, but its rally was stopped there by the Panthers defense. Mallory Dominguez made four saves in goal, giving Chapman its tenth win of the season. Sophomore forward Simi Phull (Fullerton/Sunny Hills High) scored her team-leading seventh goal and 17th point of the year in the first half on an assist from junior midfielder Sarah Barton (La Verne/Bonita High). The Panthers remain ranked third in the West Region this week, but moved up to 17th in the Division III rankings by the NSCAA.

Chapman 3, La Verne 0 – Chapman was awarded a penalty kick on a hand-ball foul in the 75th minute, and scored the game-winning goal on the ensuing shot en route to defeating visiting La Verne, 3-0. Freshman midfielder Lindsey Horst (Orange/El Modena High) scored the first goal of her career on the penalty kick. The Panthers scored two more late goals versus a short-handed La Verne team, which lost two players to red cards. For the Panthers, it was their fourth consecutive win and 11th in 13 contests to begin the season.

Chapman 30, 30, 30, Pomona-Pitzer 23, 22, 21 – Chapman put together its most complete effort this season Friday night, defeating the visiting Saghens, in front of a crowd of 160 at Harold Hutton Sports Center. Fresh off of a thrilling five-game victory over rival-Cal Lutheran on Wednesday night, the Panthers won back-to-back matches for the first time this season. Chapman looked on top of its game while earning its first three-game sweep of the year versus the SCIAC’s current second place team. Senior outside hitter Darby Stern (Topanga Canyon/Viewpoint High) led the Panthers with a match-high 12 kills, followed closely by senior outside hitter Jenny Busch (San Juan Capistrano/St. Margaret’s High) with 10. Chapman 28, 30, 27, 30, 16, Redlands 30, 22, 30, 28, 14 – Chapman avenged their September loss to Redlands, defeating the Bulldogs in hotly contested five-game marathon. For the Panthers it was their fourth consecutive victory and sixth win in their last eight matches. The Panthers improved their home record to 4-1. Chapman rallied from a two games-to-one deficit by surviving to beat a stubborn Redlands team in the fourth game. Redlands came back from Chapman leads of 7-3 and 14-11 in the decisive fifth game, before the Panthers finally put the match away on Darby Stern’s 18th kill of the night. Renee Garand came within one of Chapman’s single-match record for assists with a career-high 66. Jenny Busch led the Panthers with 20 kills and junior hitter Lacy Ertel (Newbury Park/La Reina High) recorded a team-high 29 digs. Chapman also set new school Division III records with 78 team kills, 273 attacks and 73 assists.

Occidental 10, Chapman 7 – For the second time in as many weeks, the Tigers got the best of the Panthers, defeating Chapman, 10-7 in the opening game of the Claremont Convergence. The Panthers had teetered on a one-goal lead throughout most of the game until the fourth quarter, when Occidental tied the score at 7-7, then scored the game’s final three goals. U.C. Santa Cruz 12, Chapman 6 – Division III’s third-ranked Banana Slugs built a 5-1 first-quarter lead and never looked back, defeating the Panthers, 12-6. James Foley and sophomore Garrett Potter (Mission Viejo/Mission Viejo High) each scored a pair of goals and senior goalie B.J. Ploessel (Cypress/Los Alamitos High) made 10 blocks in goal.

Chapman 12, Whittier 5 – Chapman moved up a spot in the Division III rankings this week thanks to this big win on Saturday versus the nation’s fifth-ranked Poets team. The Panthers’ 12-5 victory appeared to be in convincing fashion, however, Whittier took outshot the Panthers 25-15 in the game. B.J. Ploessel raised the bar for Chapman cageminders with a career-high and school record 20 blocks in the game, to keep the Poets at bay. And James Foley had a career day as well, setting a personal best with eight goals in the game. The Panthers moved to ninth in the Collegiate Water Polo Association’s current Division III poll.

Michigan 7, Chapman 5 – Following the Panthers’ big win over Whittier, Chapman went toe-to-toe with the nation’s third-ranked Club team, Michigan, before falling 7-5. The Panthers’ sophomore Chasen Marshall (Newport Beach/Costa Mesa High) gave Chapman a 5-4 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but the Wolverines scored three unanswered goals in the final 3:13 to win the match. Team goals-leader James Foley posted another four-goal effort for the Panthers offensively and Ploessel was solid in net once again, blocking 10 shots.
