Chapman 1, Colorado College 1 – The Panthers and Tigers played to a 1-1 tie Saturday night in an evenly and well-played match by both West Region independents. After a scoreless first half that featured just 11 shots, the two teams exchanged flurries of scoring opportunities in the second half. Colorado College took four shots in the first ten minutes of the second half, including two that were saved by sophomore keeper Efrain Rodriguez (Santa Ana/Saddleback High). Chapman then turned around and dominated the next ten minutes with four shots and a pair of corner kicks. The Panthers broke the scoreless tie in the 77th minute on a goal from junior forward Tony Ferrari (Yorba Linda/Esperanza High), but the Tigers came back with just over a minute to play in regulation on a goal from Nick Zinn. Ferrari’s goal places him tied for 17th on Chapman’s all-time scoring list with 43 career points. Colorado out-shot Chapman 4-2 in overtime, but neither could put the game away.
Cal Lutheran 2, Chapman 0 – Chapman found itself in familiar
territory entering the second half versus rival Cal Lutheran. The Kingsmen
led by two goals after one half of play each of the previous two meetings
between the two teams, but in 2001 and 2002, the Panthers rallied with
three second half goals to win. The 2003 version of this rivalry offered
no such comeback for Chapman, as it fell 2-0 to Cal Lutheran in its regular
season finale. The Kingsmen scored two early goals to take the lead for
good and maintained the shutout despite being out-shot, 18-7. The loss
gives the Panthers just their third losing season in eight years under
head coach Eddie Carrillo. Junior forward Brock
Schermerhorn (San Juan Capistrano/Aliso Niguel High) finished the
2003 season – his third as a Panther – ranked seventh in Chapman history
with 69 career points and tied for fifth in career goals with 27. He will
enter his senior year needing 34 points to tie the all-time school record
for career points.

Cal Lutheran 1, Chapman 0 – Division III's 16th-ranked Chapman
team lost just its second game at home this season, a 1-0 defeat to West
Region-rival Cal Lutheran on Monday evening. The Regals snapped a scoreless
tie with a goal from Aubreigh Hutchinson in the 82nd minute to earn the
road victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Mallory
Dominguez (San Pedro/Mary Star High) made four saves on the first
11 shots that she faced, not including a Cal Lu shot that deflected off
the crossbar in the first five minutes of the second half. The loss is
the second in Chapman's past nine games and first to Cal Lutheran since
2000.

Chapman 31, 30, 33, Cal Lutheran 29, 23, 31 – With its second
consecutive three-game sweep and third in four matches, Chapman continued
its hot play and assured itself of a winning record this season. The Panthers
defeated visiting Cal Lutheran to win their fourth straight match and ninth
in their past ten matches. Chapman also earned a season sweep over the
Regals, having won its previous match in Thousand Oaks last month. Senior
outside hitter Darby
Stern (Topanga Canyon/Viewpoint High) led Chapman offensively with
14 kills and four service aces. Stern broke her own school record for service
aces in a season tonight – she has 47 with one match to play. Junior middle
blocker Sara
Naumann (Oxnard/Oxnard High) led the team with 23 digs and made
four solo blocks. Chapman’s clinching of a winning record marks a significant
turn around for a team that began the season 4-10 after 14 matches, including
nine losses to teams ranked in the Division III top-25.

Redlands 7, Chapman 4 – Division III’s second-ranked Bulldogs were too much for Chapman in Redlands on Saturday. The Panthers entered the fourth quarter tied at 3-3, before Redlands pulled away with four consecutive goals. Junior James Foley (La Habra/Sonora High) led the Panthers with two goals and four steals. Sophomore Garrett Potter (Mission Viejo/Mission Viejo High) assisted on three of Chapman’s four goals in the loss.
Chapman 8, Claremont 5 – The Panthers concluded their regular
season on a high note. The unranked Chapman squad upset the fourth-ranked
Stags, 8-5, on the road on Sunday. The win propelled the Panthers back
into the Division III top-ten, currently ranked ninth. James Foley scored
five goals to give him a team-high 50 for the season. Sophomore Jameson
Burmeister (Yorba Linda/Esperanza High) scored a pair of goals,
assisted on two more, and grabbed three steals for Chapman, which built
a 3-1 halftime lead and thereafter never trailed. Senior goalie B.J.
Ploessel (Cypress/Los Alamitos High) played in what may have been
his final game as a Panther and went out with a bang – recording 16 blocks
in the upset win. Ploessel leaves Chapman with school records for blocks
in a game (20 vs. Whittier; 10/11/03), season (272; 2003), and career (814).
