Six Panthers Earn Verizon Academic All-District VIII Honors
ORANGE – Six of Chapman’s fall sports student-athletes were named to the Verizon Academic All-District VIII teams in their respective sports, equaling last year’s fall total. Three Chapman football players, two women’s soccer players and one men’s soccer player earned the award. For five of those student-athletes, it is the second time receiving the honor.
Junior offensive linemen Eric Eastman (Tustin/Foothill High) and Tim Newton (Torrance/North High), and junior defensive end Matt Greco (Orange/Villa Park High) all earned the award for the second time in their careers. Eastman and Newton, who have started every game for the Panthers have played a large role in Chapman’s offense which has averaged over 329 yards of total offense per game and a pass efficiency rating of 123.99. Eastman, double-majoring in economics and journalism, currently has a 3.57 grade-point average, while Newton has posted a 3.48 GPA in computer sciences. Greco, who has missed three games due to injuries, has played six games at defensive end and recorded 28 tackles, including four for a loss, and forced a team-best two fumbles. It is his second career selection to the All-District VIII team with a 3.51 GPA in business.
Two Chapman women’s soccer players earned first team honors for the first time ever. Second-timer, junior defender Liz Hopkins (Fullerton/Troy High) earned the award with a perfect 4.0 GPA in liberal studies. As a member of the Chapman defense she has not missed a minute of play in 19 games this season and is a main reason for Chapman’s 0.83 goals-against average and six shutouts, not to mention the Panthers’ fifth consecutive postseason berth. Senior midfielder Nicole Madonia (Huntington Beach/Los Alamitos High) added another accomplishment to the best season of her career. Not only has she posted career-highs in goals (six) and points (15) this season, she earned Verizon honors for the first time in her career with a 3.72 GPA in athletic training. She was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America all-academic honoree in 2002.
Junior forward Brock
Schermerhorn (San Juan Capistrano/Aliso Niguel High) also earned
the honor for the second time in his career. In 2003, Schermerhorn once
again led the Panthers in goals (eight) and points (19) for the third consecutive
season. He also climbed to seventh on Chapman’s all-time scoring list with
69 career points. He is currently working on a legal studies degree with
a 3.62 GPA.

| 11/8 | @ La Verne | L, 44-49 | 3-6 |
La Verne 49, Chapman 44 – Rivalry games never disappoint. Like they say, “throw out the records” for this one. Eight of last ten meetings between Chapman and La Verne have been decided by less than a touchdown, and nine of those games have had an average margin of victory of 3.3 points. This one was no different and as a result, the Panthers were stunned by La Verne, which won its first game of the season in an all-out offensive battle that saw the two teams combine for 93 points and 13 touchdowns.
The first quarter alone saw 49 of those points scored, as Chapman rallied from a 14-0 deficit to tie, and eventually take the lead, 28-21. Down, 21-14, the Panthers tied it again with the longest kickoff return in school history as sophomore specialist A.J. Herrera (Alta Loma/Damien High) ran 98 yards for a touchdown, breaking Chapman’s previous record by a single yard. It was the first special teams touchdown of the season for Chapman.
Tied 28-28 at halftime the momentum swings and lead changes continued until the Leopards took a 49-37 lead with two minutes remaining in the game. Junior quarterback Patrick Josten (Irvine/University High) marched the Chapman offense 53 yards in a minute and a half, finishing with a 17-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Ben Alvarado (Yorba Linda/Esperanza High) to cut the La Verne lead to five. But the onside kick failed and the Panthers hopes of a .500 season died with it. Josten completed 11-of-21 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a season-high 104 yards and a touchdown. Senior all-purpose back Michael Carter (Moreno Valley/Valley View High) rushed for a pair of touchdowns and leads the Panthers with six touchdowns this season.
Chapman travels to Azusa this weekend to face the mighty Azusa Pacific Cougars. The Cougars are 7-1 and playing in their final game of the regular season. Azusa is currently ranked 10th in NAIA and has hopes of earning a postseason berth with a win on Saturday. Chapman fell to Azusa in 2002, 44-22, but surprised the Cougars in 2001 with a 27-25 upset victory – on a game-ending 51-yard field goal. The Panthers hold a slight series edge heading into the tenth meeting in the all-time series, 5-4, but the teams have split, 2-2, in Azusa.

| 11/12 | Whittier* | W, 3-1 | 15-4 |
Chapman 1, Cal State Hayward 0 – Chapman concluded the regular season with an overtime victory over visiting Cal State Hayward, 1-0. Chapman held the Pioneers without a shot on goal in the first half, but sophomore goalkeeper Mallory Dominguez (San Pedro/Mary Star High) made three saves on five shots in the second half to earn her sixth shutout of the season. Sophomore forward Shari Lambert (Murrieta/Murrieta Valley High) scored the game-winning goal, her fifth goal of the year, less than two minutes into overtime, snapping a scoreless tie and running Chapman's record versus West Region teams to 11-3 heading into NCAA playoff selections on Sunday night. At 14-4, the Panthers are hoping for their fifth consecutive playoff berth. Chapman is a perfect 4-0 in overtime games this season.
Chapman 3, Whittier 1 – Chapman defeated Whittier, 3-1, in NCAA Division III first round playoff action. The Panthers got off to a fast start scoring two goals in the first 11 minutes of play. Shari Lambert scored on a header from junior Alyce Perry (Las Vegas, NV/Bonanza High) that fooled the Poet goalkeeper Laura Nestler and found the back of the net in the sixth minute of play. The hot start continued when senior Nicole Madonia (Huntington Beach/Los Alamitos High) placed a perfect pass onto Perry’s foot for the Panthers second goal, scored just five minutes later. Whittier countered in the 33rd minute with a goal scored by Lauren DeRemer that was perfectly placed over Mallory Dominguez’s head. The Poets continued to apply pressure early in the second half, until Chapman struck for a third and final time in the 66th minute. Sophomore Simi Phull (Fullerton/Sunny Hills High) scored her team-best eighth goal of the season off a foul kick from Lambert and blistered it just under the crossbar. Despite the 3-1 scoring deficit, the Poets outshot the Panthers, 17-13 in the game. Dominguez made all three of her saves in the second half for Chapman.

| 11/7 | Alliant International | W, 3-2 | 14-11 |
Chapman 27, 30, 19, 30, 16, Alliant International 30, 28, 30, 26, 14 – Senior outside hitter Darby Stern’s (Topanga Canyon/Viewpoint High) 25th kill of the match clinched Chapman’s fifth straight victory, a five-game come-from-behind win over Alliant International. The Panthers rallied from a two-games-to-one deficit and scored four straight points in the fifth and deciding game to overcome a 14-12 Alliant advantage and take the match. Stern’s 23rd kill was also monumental – the 1,000th of her career – making her just the third Panther in the school’s ten-year Division III history to reach that plateau. Her 25 kills marked a career-best. Both Stern and senior outside hitter Jenny Busch (San Juan Capistrano/St. Margaret’s High) were playing in the final home matches of their four-year careers. Busch, who is Chapman’s all-time leader in digs per game (2.85), finished the night with 23 digs - one of six Chapman players to reach 20 - as well as 10 kills. Busch set a new school record tonight, finishing the season with 392 digs. Five Panthers reached double-digits in kills, including sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Sczech (Huntington Beach/Huntington Beach High) with 13. Junior setter Renee Garand (Fullerton/Sunny Hills High) recorded 65 assists, just one shy of her personal best and two shy of a Chapman record. Chapman ended the regular season a winner of 10 of its final 11 matches and posting a 9-1 home record at Hutton Center. The Panthers split the season-series with Alliant International, avenging an October road loss in San Diego.
NCAA Statistics Leaders
Chapman ranks tenth in Division III as a team with 23.59 digs per game,
through matches of 11/2/03. It is the highest ranking the Panthers have
had in this category this season.

Kati Wise (Westlake/Westlake High) set three more personal school records over the weekend as the Panthers swept two meets with three dual-match wins. Chapman defeated visiting Mills College, 82-20, on Friday evening. In that meet, the senior sprinter Wise set a new school record in the 100-meter freestyle swim with a time of 55 seconds, one second better than the old mark set last February by teammate Teri Bartel (Kingsburg/Kingsburg High). On Saturday in Pasadena, Wise set two more records as the Panthers defeated both Caltech and Mills. Wise’s time of 2:01.23 in the 200-meter freestyle was more than two seconds better than Chapman’s old mark of 2:03.45, set in 2002. Wise then recorded a leadoff time of 1:02.23 in the first leg of the 400-meter medley relay – the backstroke. Her split time eclipsed Chapman’s previous mark in the 100-meter backstroke by nearly two seconds.
