Chapman 77, Colorado College 42 – Senior forward Caroline Jensen (San Diego/University High) paced the Panthers to a 35-point win over West Region rival Colorado College in the opening game of the Chapman Tournament. Jensen scored 24 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead all players. It was Jensen’s 10th double-double of the season. Junior guard Kelly Crampton (Livermore/Granada High) scored 10 points and led the Panthers with five assists. Chapman held the Tigers to just 26.3 percent shooting in the game and allowed just 42 points against, the second-lowest opponent point total of the season for Chapman. The Panthers finished their schedule versus West Region opponents with a 14-1 record, the one blemish a two-point loss to SCIAC leading Claremont in early December.
Chapman 64, Dallas 47 – The senior tandem of Caroline Jensen and guard Mel Bongiorno (Stowe, VT/Rice Memorial High) posted nearly identical lines in the box score, including 18 points and seven rebounds apiece to lead Chapman to a 17-point win over the University of Dallas in the Chapman Tournament finale. Jensen also finished with four blocked shots. The Panthers shot just 36 percent from the floor in the game, but out-rebounded Dallas, 45-36 in the game. The win was Chapman’s 11th straight victory and seventh straight at home.
Biola 72, Chapman 63 – On a night in which Chapman honored two of its all-time best, the visiting Eagles played spoiler, downing the Panthers, 72-63 in their regular season finale. The loss snapped Chapman’s 11-game winning streak and drops the West Region’s second-ranked team to 20-4 heading into Division III’s “Selection Sunday” on February 29th. The two teams engaged in a defensive struggle through much of the first half, with Chapman leading the entire way, taking a 26-25 halftime lead. But the Eagles came out of the locker room firing, opening the period on a 12-0 run and shooting 66.7 percent (16-for-24) from the field in the second half. The Panthers rallied midway through the second half, nearly overcoming a 12-point deficit and cutting the lead to two points with just under six minutes to play. But the Eagles answered with a 14-2 run of their own and held on. Senior guard Mel Bongiorno, playing in the final regular season home game of her career, led Chapman with 21 points and seven steals. Chapman’s all-time leading scorer notched her 1,700th career point late in the second half. She is currently at 1,706. It was an historic weekend for junior swimmer Kati Wise (Westlake, OH/Westlake High), who not only broke three individual and two relay team Chapman records, but became the first swimmer in the school’s history to earn an invite to the Division III national championships. Wise set school records in the 100-yard freestyle, the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley and beat the ‘A’ Cut times – which automatically qualify her for championship participation – in both the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley. She ranks fourth in Division III in both of those events and 16th in the nation in the 100-yard freestyle. Wise will compete in all three events at the championships in St. Peters, Missouri.
Junior Wendy
Martinovich (Costa Mesa/Costa Mesa High) broke her own two-year
old school record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:34.2, shaving
two-hundredths of a second off her old mark. And two Chapman relay teams
set new school bests in the 400-yard medley and the 800-yard freestyle.
Wise anchored both teams and Jody
Martinovich (Costa Mesa/Costa Mesa High) was also involved in both.

Chapman 5, Pacific 3 – The Panthers broke open a 1-1 tie with four runs in the sixth inning to make a winner out of senior right-hander Al Lambert (Costa Mesa/Costa Mesa High) in the Arizona Desert Classic opener. Sophomore designated hitter Brian Brubaker (Denver, CO/Cherry Creek High) doubled in a run in the sixth and senior outfielder Chris Van Camp (Placentia/Valencia High) singled and drove a pair of runs in the win. Lambert allowed just three hits and no earned runs in six and a third innings pitched and junior right-hander Scott Akamine (Anaheim/Savanna High) retired the game’s final two batters, including a strikeout, for his third save of the season.
Chapman 14, Whitman 0 – Senior catcher Matt Graves (Glendora/Glendora High) came off the bench and hit two doubles in the same inning as Chapman sent 12 men to the plate and erupted for nine runs in the sixth inning to defeat Whitman 14-0. Senior shortstop Brian Sanders (Placentia/El Dorado High) finished 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in, while freshman outfielder Tyler Dean (North Plains/Century High) homered and scored a pair of runs for Chapman, which totaled 16 hits in the win. Freshman right-handers Devin Drag (Rancho Palos Verdes/Mary Star High) and Kyle Johnson (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) combined for the first shutout for the season for the Panthers.
George Fox 2, Chapman 1 – In the first rematch of last year’s West Region finals, the Bruins scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh inning off Chapman starter, sophomore left-hander Billy Sulentor (Rancho Palos Verdes/Mary Star High). The loss spoiled an otherwise solid effort from Sulentor, who scattered six hits and struck out five batters in the complete game. Chapman out-hit George Fox with singles from seven different players in its lineup. Tyler Dean scored Chapman’s only run in the third inning, an inning in which the Bruins escaped disaster as the Panthers left the bases loaded.
Chapman 3, Whitworth 2 – The Panthers scored a pair of unearned runs in a three-run fourth inning and that was all they needed to defeat the Pirates in Arizona Desert Classic action. Brian Sanders had two of Chapman’s six team hits and sophomore right-hander Buddy Klovstad (Orange/El Modena High) earned his first career win with five strikeouts over six shutout innings. Scott Akamine pitched two-thirds of an inning to earn his fourth save of the year. Akamine recorded five saves in 2003.

Dunn struck out two batters in what was her 13th straight regular season victory. Chapman collected 15 more hits and four more extra-base hits in a game that was shortened to five innings by ‘mercy rule’. Brittany Ziegler went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI and Meredith Cipolla had a pair of hits, including her first home run of the season, and three RBI. Sophomore right-hander Erin Bryant (Puyallup, WA/Emerald Ridge High) was the beneficiary of the offensive production and limited the Tigers to just three hits and one unearned run, as well as four strikeouts for her first win of the season.
Chapman 8, Gustavus Adolphus 0 – Brittany Ziegler homered in her first two at bats, doubled and drove in four runs as Chapman defeated the defending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions Gustavus Adolphus, 8-0. Sophomore right-hander Marissa Becerra (Orange/Mater Dei High) stifled the Gusties over six shutout innings, allowing just four hits and one walk and hasn’t allowed a run over her last 19 1/3 consecutive innings, dating back to April 27, 2003. The shutout was her fifth career shutout. Meredith Cipolla also had three hits, including a pair of doubles and two runs batted in and Keely Starr collected three hits.

more hits, including a double and a triple and two RBI and Meredith Cipolla
drove in three runs. Sophomore outfielder Kailee
Roeser (River Forest, IL/River Forest High) also had a pair of
hits and a pair of runs scored in the win. Maggie Wilder picked up her
first career win with three strikeouts in five innings of relief.
