A Comparison of Asynchronous Online Abstract This study investigated student performance and student satisfaction of preservice general education and special education students who participated in two types of online instruction. These included: (a) asynchronous text-based online lectures via WebCT/Blackboard and (b) synchronous web conferencing lectures via Elluminate Live. Results of the study revealed that both types of lectures are effective in delivering online instruction. Additionally, 73.2% of the students indicated that they would rather take an online course that uses synchronous web conferencing lectures than an online course that uses asynchronous text-based lectures. Students’ perception of their technology skills also improved over the course of the semester.
