 Melissa McGonigal Berry joined the Chapman faculty in 2003 as an Assistant Professor. Before coming to Chapman, Professor Berry taught at the University of Washington School of Law. She practiced law on both coasts before she began teaching. At Latham & Watkins’ Washington, D.C. office, she practiced regulatory law and litigation. She then moved to Seattle, where she was an associate in the litigation department of Perkins Coie LLP, working on issues ranging from commercial, business tort and intellectual property to a successful pro bono constitutional challenge to state term limits. She also was a Perkins Coie Community Service Fellow with TeamChild, a nonprofit organization providing legal advocacy for youth involved in the juvenile justice system. Professor Berry received her J.D., cum laude, from Northwestern University School of Law, where she served as the Coordinating Note & Comment Editor for the Northwestern University Law Review. After law school, Professor Berry served as a judicial clerk to Honorable Terence T. Evans, Chief Judge, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, and the Honorable David B. Sentelle, U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. She holds a B.A., cum laude, from Tulane University, with a double major in Political Science and Latin American Studies. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
